Curator’s statement
Last month, I had the wonderful opportunity to board the AmaMora and discover the Rhine castles and Swiss Alps, all in a very festive atmosphere. The charm of the Christmas markets, the snowfall, hot red wine and excellent service while aboard kicked off the festive season in a memorable way.

The AmaWaterways Rhine River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basel docks at some of Europe’s most scenic and historically rich landscapes in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland. A pre-cruise option in Amsterdam and post cruise to Lake Como are offered and should be taken advantage of as there is so much to see in both these destinations.
The ship was beautifully decorated for Christmas, from the front desk, to the lounge, and even each individual stateroom door. I stayed in a stateroom with a French balcony, with floor to ceiling windows. It was always bright, even at this time of year when Europe has less sunshine. It was very comfortable, updated and housekeeping kept it immaculate.
The dining was amazing! There is one main restaurant (open seating) and the Chef's Table, both serving regional and international options. The Chef's Table offers a more intimate, exclusive dining experience with creative, multi-course meals prepared in an open kitchen. We were never disappointed and had a wonderful meal each time.
Onboard entertainment is relatively low-key, but the experience is still very enjoyable. In the evenings, the lounge hosts live music performances ranging from classical musicians to jazz bands, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.
The ship offers bicycles for guests to use during shore excursions, and there are fitness facilities for morning workouts. The small but well-equipped spa offers a range of treatments, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration.
Each port of call offers a choice of included excursions, ranging from guided city tours to wine tastings, nature walks or even bike tours along the riverbanks. AmaWaterways is known for offering a variety of excursions to cater to different interests and activity levels.
One of my favorite visits was to Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet, a true wonder!
The Christmas markets in Cologne and Rudsheim offered warm red wine, hearty soups and decadent chocolates. Also perfect stops to bring back local ornaments or winter apparel. Strasbourg and Luzern are two beautiful cities with typical architecture and beautiful facades. I was lucky to see Luzerne with snow adding an extra point to its charm.
This is where to buy THE BEST chocolate in Luzern: Laderach
This is a wonderful itinerary which I would also consider doing in the spring.
At this time of year, it is essential to pack a very good pair of insulated, waterproof shoes as well as a warm winter jacket and all the apparel for a snowy, winter destination. And if you forget something, no worries, you can purchase the necessary along the way.
