Where to stay in Detroit

My recent solo excursion to Detroit, undertaken with an infant, proved to be a surprisingly vibrant and fulfilling experience, even during the city's presumed off-season. The foundation for this positive trip was undoubtedly my chosen accommodation, the Hampton Inn & Suites in Detroit/Chesterfield Township. As a single parent navigating a large urban environment, prioritizing safety and a welcoming atmosphere was paramount. This hotel not only met but exceeded these expectations. The impeccably maintained lobby exuded a warm hospitality, and every interaction with the staff was marked by genuine helpfulness and a cheerful demeanor. The provision of a substantial breakfast, coupled with convenient amenities such as a pool, gym and round-the-clock coffee access, significantly enhanced the comfort and ease of my stay.

My exploration of the Detroit area encompassed a diverse range of attractions, beginning with the enchanting Belle Isle. A brief and picturesque drive from the hotel led to this unique state land, strategically positioned between the United States and Canada. Belle Isle offers a wealth of activities, from panoramic international vistas to the tranquil beauty of the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and the fascinating exhibits of the Belle Isle Aquarium. The island's extensive trails and the historic lighthouse point provide ample opportunities for leisurely exploration and appreciation of the natural surroundings.

Later in the week, our itinerary included a visit to the Sea Life Aquarium and the Great Lakes Crossing Outlets. The aquarium proved to be an engaging and family-friendly destination, featuring interactive touch tanks and an immersive underwater tunnel teeming with sharks, rays and sea turtles. The adjacent outlet mall offers a comprehensive shopping and dining experience, conveniently laid out on a single floor for easy navigation. My dining experience at the Rainforest Cafe within the mall was a particular highlight, providing a captivating tropical ambiance complete with simulated thunderstorms and animatronic wildlife, creating a memorable and enjoyable meal for all ages.

Need to know

While this trip focused on Belle Isle and Great Lakes Crossing, the Detroit area boasts a wealth of other attractions worth exploring on future visits. These include the vibrant MotorCity Casino for entertainment, the historically rich Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, the diverse animal habitats of the Detroit Zoo, and the iconic Mom's Spaghetti for a taste of local flavor.

Additional tips, advice, and recommendations:

  • Transportation: While having a car offers flexibility for exploring the wider Detroit area, consider utilizing ride-sharing services or public transportation within the city itself to avoid parking hassles, especially during events.

  • Seasonal considerations: Detroit experiences distinct seasons. Plan your wardrobe accordingly and be aware that outdoor attractions like Belle Isle may have different appeal depending on the time of year. Summer offers lush greenery and outdoor activities, while fall brings beautiful foliage.

  • Local events: Check local event listings for festivals, concerts and sporting events happening during your visit. These can add an extra layer of excitement to your trip.

  • Safety: As with any large city, be mindful of your surroundings, especially when traveling alone. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your route, particularly at night.

  • Dining: Beyond the Rainforest Cafe and Mom's Spaghetti, Detroit has a fantastic and diverse culinary scene. Explore different neighborhoods for unique dining experiences, from coney dogs to ethnic cuisine.

  • Book in advance: For popular attractions like the Henry Ford Museum or special events, consider booking tickets in advance to save time and ensure entry.

  • Embrace the culture: Detroit has a rich history and a unique cultural identity. Take the time to learn about its musical heritage, automotive history and artistic contributions. Explore different neighborhoods to get a true feel for the city's spirit.

  • Flexibility: While having a plan is helpful, be open to spontaneous discoveries and changes in your itinerary. Some of the best travel moments are often unplanned.

  • Enjoy the vibe: Detroit is a city with a resilient and energetic spirit. Embrace its unique character and enjoy the journey of discovery.
