The best hotels in Lake Como
From Passalacqua to Villa d’Este, here’s where to stay in Lake Como.
Passalacqua
Passalacqua — voted the “best hotel in the world” in 2023 by World’s 50 Best Hotels — is an ultra-luxe boutique hotel in Montrosio, a tiny commune on the southern stretch of Lake Como. It’s about 20 minutes from Como Town by car. The property offers an intimate and refined escape in a stunning historic villa. There are only 30 rooms, each individually designed to reflect the traditional luxury of the destination while feeling fresh and contemporary.
“The hotel is a maximalist’s dream, with rich décor and warm details that exude personality and charm,” Fora Advisor Alexandra Shea. “It’s perfect for clients who appreciate unique, curated luxury in a private setting.”
There are terraced gardens, a lakeside pool (you can also swim in the lake) and exquisite dining experiences that celebrate Italian cuisine.
“Passalaqua was renovated and designed from the ground up to be chic as hell (and it is),” Fora Advisor Bekah LeBeau said. “For example, breakfast is served in the beautiful kitchen. Now, it's a stunning kitchen — perhaps the most beautiful you or I have ever seen — but a kitchen all the same.”
The big highlight, however, may be Passacqua’s spa. Many of the treatments are inspired by Como’s countryside traditions. The hotel's radiant owner Valentina De Santis partnered with Italian skincare brand Seed to Skin, which crafts their heavenly products with ingredients grown on an organic Tuscan farm. Eighteenth-century hidden passages (really) add a layer of mystique to the experience.
Fora Perks at Passalacqua:
$100 hotel / resort credit, breakfast daily, complimentary air and concierge services, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo
Grand Hotel Tremezzo is another iconic hotel in Lake Como, and a sister property to Passalaqua. The property boasts stellar views of the lake and nearby Bellagio.
“Grand Hotel Tremezzo is all about the views; lunch here means overlooking Lake Como with big spritzes and perfectly cooked spaghetti — an idyllic lakeside meal,” Fora Advisor Wendy Wallace said.
It also happens to be neighbors with Villa Carlotta, a museum and botanic garden housed in a former 17th-century estate. Enjoy a floating pool on the lake, a private beach and a covetable wellness center, complete with a luxe spa and an indoor infinity pool.

Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa
Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa, a Fora Reserve partner, is situated in the town of Menaggio, on the western shores of Lake Como. A variety of upscale shops and eateries are only a couple blocks away, offering a taste of local life without sacrificing privacy or access to the water. Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa departs from the classical historic aesthetic of most properties on Lake Como, offering a sophisticated and contemporary atmosphere.
Indulge in its state-of-the-art spa, which features a range of wellness treatments and an indoor pool, or relax in the picturesque outdoor pool and take in the lake views. On-site dining highlights refined Italian cuisine, with menus inspired by the Como region’s culinary traditions. Fora Advisor Jeff Goldstein spent three days at Grand Hotel Victoria in Lake Como, describing the property as a charming base to explore nearby towns, as there’s a ferry terminal close by.
Fora Perks at Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa:
$100 hotel / resort credit, welcome amenity, breakfast daily and an upgrade whenever possible.
Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como
Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como is set in a restored 19th-century villa surrounded by lush botanical gardens. While the façade reflects well-manicured historic charm, the interiors are defined by a luxurious contemporary Italian design; the hotel would fit in just as well in fashion-forward Milan as it does on the eastern shores of Lake Como, near the quiet towns of Blevio and Torno. You can enjoy scenic lake views from the hotel’s large infinity pool, indulge in holistic treatments at its world-class spa or savor gourmet Italian cuisine at the resort’s lakeside restaurant, L˜Aria (get the seared tuna, you won’t regret it).

Palazzo Albricci Peregrini
Palazzo Albricci Peregrini is unique among hotels in Lake Como in that it’s housed in a small palace that dates back to a time before Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. Six centuries after its original construction, Palazzo Albricci Peregrini is a boutique gem in the heart of downtown Como. It’s an intimate property that features only a handful of individually styled rooms, each reflecting the town’s classical atmosphere. The hotel’s prime location places you steps away from Como’s historic town center, waterfront and landmarks like the Basilica di San Fedele. It’s a top choice if you’re looking for a convenient base from which to explore Lake Como’s major urban hub. Another highlight: The hotel’s on-site restaurant sources ingredients from Como’s local market to create a new menu everyday.
Fora Perks at Palazzo Albricci Peregrini:
€20 spa credit, complimentary full-day bike rental, complimentary welcome drink an upgrade whenever possible.
il Sereno
il Sereno is a super sleek, contemporary hotel designed by renowned Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola. It’s located in the town of Torno, which, aside from a few eateries, shops and upscale residences, is largely quiet. The hotel is endlessly stylish, and only features suites, all with floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces overlooking the lake. Large rooms are accented with warm woods, cream marbles and hand-poured terrazzo floors, and all feature free-standing soaking tubs. Notably, il Sereno is one of the only purpose-built hotels on Lake Como — it didn’t previously serve as a private villa.
“Il Sereno is a series of wow moments from the moment you arrive,” Fora Advisor Ashley Emala said.
You can enjoy an infinity pool, private beach and bespoke lake tours aboard the hotel’s custom-made wooden boats. You can also take smaller boats out on your own.
“Il Sereno is the kind of place where, within an hour of checking in, most staff know your name,” Fora Advisor Bekah LeBeau said. “All the spaces are warm and inviting — the kind of place you wouldn't feel weird about walking from the spa, through the hotel and up to your room in just a robe.”
The Michelin-Starred restaurant, il Sereno al Lago, is led by a world-class chef, and showcases seasonal, locally sourced cuisine. Fora Advisor Courtney Jewell highlighted a “heavenly” carrot, almond and parsley risotto, with Caciocavallo Podolico cheese and fermented lemon Garofoli.
Fora Perks at Il Sereno:
$100 hotel / resort credit, breakfast daily, complimentary air and concierge services, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
Villa d’Este
Villa d’Este is where to stay in Lake Como if you’re looking for a classic lakeside retreat that epitomizes historical elegance and grandeur. The iconic hotel is housed in a former 16th-century residence near Como Town. Its grounds feature landscaped gardens, jogging paths, a floating swimming pool on the lake and antique furnishings. The resort also includes a high-end spa, tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course.
“Villa d’Este is pure classic Como,” Fora Advisor Marisa Schwab said. ”The moment you arrive, it’s like stepping into a world of timeless elegance, with grand architecture, lush gardens and lakeside views that are just unbeatable.”
While luxurious and immaculately maintained, Villa d’Este is perhaps not the best choice if you’re looking for something more contemporary. It is, however, renowned for its exceptional service.
“The staff is formally attentive and yet warm and helpful in a way rarely experienced anymore,” Fora Advisor Bekah LeBeau said. “From tuxedo-clad servers to the incredible turndown service provided by highly skilled housekeepers, every aspect of this hotel lives up to its reputation of providing old-school glamour at every turn.”
Fora Perks at Villa d’Este:
$100 food / beverage credit, breakfast daily, complimentary air and concierge services, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Where to stay in Lake Como and related travel FAQs
Read on for answers to questions about where to stay in Lake Como.
What area of Lake Como is the best to stay in? Which side of Lake Como is best?
Lake Como’s southern and central areas are the most popular options. The northern stretch of the lake hosts fewer hotels and isn’t as well connected as the rest of the lake; though it is great for hiking and there are usually fewer people on the water. The central area, often referred to as the “Golden Triangle,” is great for its accessibility and stunning scenery. Towns like Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio are centrally located, providing easy ferry access to one another and showcasing the lake’s beauty with panoramic views of the Alps. If you prefer a livelier atmosphere, the southern end near Como Town is ideal. It has a bustling vibe, excellent transport connections to Milan (here’s how to get from Milan to Lake Como) and access to cultural landmarks like Villa Carlotta.
Should you stay in Como Town when visiting Lake Como?
Only if you want a lively, urban setting. Como Town’s busy streets may not be for you if you're looking for a quieter stay, especially if you prefer direct access to the water.
Is Lake Como walkable?
Yes. Many of the towns that surround Lake Como — like Bellagio and Menaggio — have walkable areas, like waterfront promenades and shopping areas. Bike rentals are also available in some towns.
Is Lake Como expensive to visit?
Lake Como has a reputation for being one of Europe’s most exclusive destinations. Many of the accommodations on the lake are among Italy’s most luxurious. Fora Advisor Bekah LeBeau noted that a small family, for example, could easily spend $2,000–$3,000 per night, plus up to $1,000 per day on food and activities on the lake. If you prefer a much wider range of accommodations, check out where to stay in Lake Garda.
Can you swim in Lake Como?
Yes, particularly in designated swimming areas like Lido di Bellagio, Lido di Lenno and San Giovanni Beach. While you can technically swim in most areas across the lake, boat traffic is heavy. Lake Como is fed by the Adda River in the Alps, so the water can be very cold in deeper parts of the lake, even in summer.
How many days in Lake Como is enough?
Lake Como is a destination where travelers come to unwind and enjoy the scenery. We recommend spending at least three days in Lake Como, particularly if you want to explore all or some of the surrounding towns. But you could easily spend a week or longer enjoying amenities at the best hotels in Lake Como.
