I recently had the opportunity to attend the Travel + Leisure Cruise Summit, a gathering of 60 travel advisors and industry leaders, from members of T+L’s Advisory Board to executive team members from AmaWaterways, Regent, Explora Journeys, Crystal Cruises, Oceania, Azamara and Ponant.

The discussions at the summit highlighted an inspiring recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, showcasing renewed enthusiasm for the cruise industry. With 35.7 million passengers expected to set sail in 2024, this marks a 6% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, signaling a robust rebound for cruising as a preferred travel option.

This resurgence reflects a growing interest across various demographics, particularly among Millennials and Gen Z, who are increasingly exploring cruising for the first time. Notably, 27% of cruisers over the past two years are new-to-cruise, indicating that the industry is successfully attracting first-time travelers.

As we look ahead, it’s clear that cruising is evolving rapidly, with new ships and itineraries designed to cater to diverse interests — from immersive cultural experiences to eco-friendly travel options. The excitement around these developments is palpable. With so many opportunities on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to explore what cruising has to offer. Here’s what to expect as we sail into a new cruise era.

The Rise of Millennials, Gen Z and multi-generational cruising

A notable trend highlighted at the summit is the increasing participation of Millennials and Gen Z in cruising. Recent data reveals that nearly half of all cruise passengers now belong to these younger generations, and many express a strong desire to cruise again. This shift also reflects a rise in multi-generational cruising, where families travel together across various age groups.

Approximately 28% of cruise travelers sail with family members spanning at least two generations. Modern cruise ships offer diverse activities suitable for all ages — from thrilling water parks for kids to relaxing lounges for grandparents — making it an ideal option for families looking to bond while exploring multiple destinations.

Popular cruise misconceptions

There are many misconceptions about cruising. Many people still believe that cruises are only for older travelers or families. Partying, long lines and mediocre food might come to mind. However, today’s cruises cater to a diverse audience, including solo travelers and those seeking unique experiences. With improved dining options (like those at Oceania; more on that below) and strategies implemented by cruise lines to minimize wait times, travelers can expect a luxurious experience that appeals to a wide range of tastes and preferences.

Oceania Cruises is widely regarded as having some of the best cuisine at sea. The line partners with renowned chefs like Jacques Pépin and Giada De Laurentiis to create outstanding menus. The line is particularly praised for its variety and ability to cater to different dietary needs.

Developments in luxury cruising

Excitement is building around new luxury ships from companies like Crystal Cruises and Explora Journeys. Crystal has announced plans for two new luxury ships launching in 2028, featuring all-suite cabins with private verandas and gourmet dining options like Umi Uma, the only Nobu restaurant at sea.

Explora Journeys introduced Explora II in October 2024. Explora III will debut in 2026, and will emphasize sustainability with LNG (liquified natural gas) power. Overall, both Explora Journeys and Crystal Cruises are setting the stage for a new era of luxury cruising that prioritizes exceptional experiences at sea.

An emphasis on wellness programs is also growing among luxury cruises. Regent Seven Seas Cruises stands out with its "Serene Spa & Wellness" concept. This program features state-of-the-art fitness facilities and a variety of yoga and fitness classes designed to promote physical wellbeing. Guests can also enjoy wellness-focused shore excursions that enhance their travel experience. The Seven Seas Grandeur introduces groundbreaking treatments, along with a Zero Gravity Wellness Massage that utilizes advanced treatment tables.

Oceania Cruises emphasizes wellness through its Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center program. This initiative includes wellness-focused shore excursions and offers acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine treatments. The culinary aspect of wellness is also highlighted with the Aquamar Vitality Cuisine program, which focuses on nourishing meals designed to promote overall health.

Sustainability efforts

A highlight of the summit was PONANT's commitment to sustainability, particularly through its innovative icebreaker ship, Le Commandant Charcot. This vessel is not only designed for polar exploration but also serves as a platform for scientific research; there are two dedicated laboratories onboard.

PONANT has invested significantly in sustainable technologies, achieving an 11% reduction in CO2 emissions per cruise day compared to 2018 levels. The company has trialed B100 biofuel — which emits 90% less CO2 emissions than traditional fossil fuels — and aims for net-zero emissions by 2050. PONANT’s sustainability roadmap, named Blue Horizon, focuses on reducing environmental footprints while enhancing positive contributions through advanced technologies.

Additional cruise lines are committing to eco-friendly practices. For instance, Explora Journeys has banned single-use plastics on board and during land-based experiences. Their ships are designed with lots of battery storage, allowing for future hybrid power generation. All six of Explora's ships will be RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) Dolphin-certified, ensuring low underwater noise emissions to help preserve marine life. Most cruise lines are investing heavily in LNG technology as part of their commitment to reducing environmental impact and meeting stricter emissions regulations.

Looking ahead

As I reflect on the future of cruising, I'm genuinely excited about the transformation taking place in the industry. Whether you're a cruise veteran or considering your first voyage, there's never been a better time to set sail. The commitment to innovation and guest experience is evident, and I’m confident that unforgettable journeys and unique experiences await as more people discover the joys of travel by sea.
