    Is Sedona in the desert?

A view of L'Auberge de Sedona's surroundings, with lots of trees under a blue sky and red rocks in the distance

Image courtesy of L'Auberge de Sedona

Technically, yes, though it doesn’t look like a typical desert. Sedona is located within the high desert of northern Arizona, and sits at about 4,500 feet above sea level. This higher elevation results in milder temperatures than the lower deserts. Here, arid desert meets lush greenery, creating a striking contrast against red-rock formations through most of the year. In winter, it’s not out of the norm to spy frost on the ground.

Why is the area famous? What are the best things to do in Sedona, Arizona?

Sedona is one of the best places to visit in Arizona. It’s unique, beautiful and one of the Southwest’s top wellness destinations.

“Renowned for its spiritual energy and breathtaking vistas, this enchanting destination beckons travelers from around the globe to immerse themselves in its unique blend of natural wonders and New Age mystique,” Fora Advisor Gillian Spatz said in her guide to visiting Sedona, Arizona. “Whether embarking on a scenic hike amid the towering sandstone formations of Red Rock State Park, indulging in holistic wellness treatments at one of its many renowned spas or simply basking in the serenity of its sun-kissed vistas, Sedona promises an unforgettable journey of exploration and rejuvenation.”

Sedona attracts nature lovers, artists and those seeking rejuvenation. Explore scenic hiking trails, visit landmarks like the Chapel of the Holy Cross and enjoy outdoor activities such as mountain biking, 4x4 tours and (outside of the city) stargazing. Sedona is a hub for spiritual and wellness retreats, offering meditation, yoga and holistic healing. The town’s charming shopping areas, like Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, and nearby attractions like Oak Creek Canyon and local wineries, add to its appeal.

"What I love about Sedona are the spiritual elements,” Fora Advisor Zoe Schaeffer said. “Sourcing crystals with kids is always a fun way to tap into the magic, as is doing a ‘Vortex Tour’ on the mountain to feel its unique vibrations — and just enjoying the magical red landscape that's so unique to the area.”

What’s the best part of Sedona to stay in?

Image courtesy of Ambiente, A Landscape Hotel

Most travelers choose between Uptown Sedona, West Sedona and the Oak Creek area. Uptown has a bustling mix of shops, restaurants and galleries. It’s a great choice for first-time visitors who want convenient access to dining and shopping, and proximity to several trailheads and scenic viewpoints. West Sedona is known for its residential and laid-back vibe; it’s better for those seeking a quieter stay while still being relatively close to amenities and some of Sedona’s best hiking trails, like the popular Devil’s Bridge and Boynton Canyon. The Village of Oak Creek is just south of Sedona proper. This area offers a more tranquil setting with stunning views of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. It’s a good option for those who prefer a slower pace and easy access to golf courses, hiking trails and less crowded areas. A Fora Advisor can provide more details on each area, as well as other parts of Sedona worth visiting.

Is Sedona walkable? What’s the best way to get around the city?

Uptown Sedona, where you’ll find a variety of shops and restaurants, is walkable and bike-friendly. However, most attractions in the city are best reached by car. A Fora Advisor can help you get a rental car or arrange ground transportation

How many days should you spend in Sedona for the best experience?

Allot three to four days if you plan on enjoying all or most of Sedona’s highlights. You can spend a day hiking popular trails like Cathedral Rock and Devil's Bridge, another day exploring the vibrant art scene and shops in Uptown Sedona and then another day relaxing at a spa. A fourth day provides flexibility to visit additional attractions and enjoy more wellness activities.

When’s the best time to visit Sedona?

Spring and fall are the best times to visit Sedona. The weather in both seasons is mild and pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and vibrant colors, while fall offers crisp air and beautiful foliage.

Summer in Sedona is very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 90°F. However, many of the spa resorts still offer a refreshing escape. Winter is cooler and can bring occasional snowfall, adding a picturesque quality to the red rocks, though some attractions may be less accessible (or closed).

Is it better to stay in Flagstaff or Sedona? What about Scottsdale?

red rock cliffs and a red stucco building with trees and a blue sky

Image courtesy of Enchantment Resort, Sedona

It comes down to preference. Sedona is a smaller, more tranquil town with a focus on outdoor activities and relaxation about two hours north of Phoenix, where Arizona’s largest airport is. It's perfect for those looking for a peaceful, scenic escape with opportunities for hiking, art galleries and spa experiences. Flagstaff is an affordable base with attractions like the Lowell Observatory and access to the San Francisco Peaks. It’s also conveniently located near the Grand Canyon (and about 45 minutes north of Sedona). However, Flagstaff lacks the dramatic red-rock scenery and spiritual vibe of Sedona.

Scottsdale, part of the Greater Phoenix area, is a better option if you’re interested in a more urban, luxury-focused experience. It’s known for high-end resorts, golf courses, shopping and fine dining.

In addition to several of the options above, many hotels in Sedona are pet-friendly. A Fora Advisor can provide details on each hotel’s pet policy and help you choose the hotel that best suits your needs. Just reach out.

How far in advance should you book Sedona hotels?

Sedona is a popular destination. To get your desired accommodations, we recommend booking at least three to six months in advance. Last-minute bookings might still be possible, though; your options may just be limited.
