France has had quite the year. It hosted the Olympics, was summer’s *it* destination and débuted the coveted Michelin Key. Following this year’s DUCO France, an élite annual travel summit held in Paris, our advisors are eager to share their inside accounts of rising trends and under-the-radar properties. There’s so much more to the country than top-10 hits, and Fora Advisors can unlock its secrets for you. Here’s where to go next. When you’re ready, connect with one of the featured advisors for expert planning for the trip of a lifetime.

Small hotels, lots of personality

Big hotel names will never go out of style, but travelers are increasingly seeking more intimate, boutique, and personality-driven getaways. France is the perfect place to fan the flames of this travel trend.

“There is something special about finding that hidden gem, and very small localized hotel groups are a great way to do that,” Fora Advisor Celine Raymond said.

She cited a few favorites. Go for Beaumier hotels for boutique properties “full of charm” in Provence, the French Riviera and the Alps. Leitmotiv is perfect for hotels located in local neighborhoods; their properties are for travelers “who have been somewhere a million times before and want to truly experience it like a local.” Finally, opt for something from Paris Society’s collection for the trendiest hotels — and restaurants — in France. Natalie Stegman said the company can help Fora Advisors get those "hard-to-snag reservations" for clients at the hottest clubs, event spaces and restaurants — like Loulou, for instance.

“There is a growing interest in authenticity and the celebration of heritage in design and experiences,” Fora Advisor Emmanuel Perez added, noting how properties throughout the country venter their storytelling on “the revival of historical buildings, preserving cultural significance and incorporating local craftsmanship into interiors and the experiences they offer — tying this to their local heritage and surroundings.”

In keeping with the small size, big personality theme, Celine said that maximalism is back and better than ever: “So many properties are leaving the 50 shades of beige behind and embracing colors, patterns and fun,” she said. “Great news for design-inclined clients who want a property with lots of personality.”

Even better hotels are (finally) "realizing the need to have options for clients arriving early in the morning," Fora Advisor Pamela Murphy said, with "more rooms being allocated to relaxing before check-in."

Unique experiences, from shopping to cognac making

Fora Advisors book more than hotels. Exclusive experiences are popping up on many advisor-curated itineraries, courtesy of some stellar on-the-ground partners who know how to turn a great trip into an extraordinary one. Fora Advisors Daryn Schwartz and Natalie mentioned Samarataine, a luxury department store just off the Seine, which offers Fora travelers a complimentary shopping session with a stylist.

“You simply provide sizing and preferences and they will have options waiting for you in one of their four luxury apartments,” Daryn said. “You can also arrange Champagne, food, cognac tastings for the husband, hair, makeup and more!”

Celine called it “the ultimate shopping experience Vivian Ward should have gotten in Pretty Woman.” Celine also mentioned 1889 Experiences, another Fora partner that delivers the ultimate VIP treatment.

“Whether it be shutting down a museum, having exclusive access to fashion houses' archives or visiting the cathedral of Reims with a stained-glass expert, 1889 Experiences truly has the best access,” she said.

And then hotels themselves are also stepping up their game. Villa La Coste, in Provence, offers guests private art tours of their extensive collection, which includes works from the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Serra, Celine added. She added that Auberge’s Domaine des Etangs, in Cognac, has collaborated with premium cognac brand Martell. Someone from the cognac team comes to the property, leads a tasting and helps you blend your own bottle to take home with you.

Unique experiences extend to nature, too. Fora Advisor Nancy Deane cited the increasing popularity of regions like Normandy, which, "with its stunning coastline, rich history and renowned beaches," she said, "is drawing visitors for its mix of natural beauty and cultural landmarks, from the D-Day beaches to the picturesque town of Honfleur."

On France's southwestern shores, you'll find the Grande Dune du Pilat, Europe's tallest sand dune. Comer here to relax and take in the views, paraglide, hike and dune surf. Nancy called the over-300-foot-tall dune "one of France's most awe-inspiring natural landmarks." It's not to be missed.
