Things to do in Luang Prabang, Laos

  • Visit the UXO Lao Visitor Center — This museum details the harrowing stories of the "secret war" that took place in Laos during the Vietnam War and is a must for any visitor to Luang Prabang. Entry is free, but donations are highly recommended.

  • Catch a sunrise or sunset at Phousi Hill — Climb the 300+ stairs up to this iconic viewpoint. Enjoy panoramic views of the city as the sun rises or sets.

  • Stroll around the Luang Prabang Night Market — Meander through the maze of vendors to find a tasty dinner dish or unique souvenir, such as a handmade paper lantern.

  • Visit a Buddhist temple - Luang Prabang has no shortage of Buddhist temples to explore, such as Wat Wisunarat, Wat Xiengthong or Wat Manorom.

  • Stop by the National Museum — This museum is housed in the former royal palace and features incredible displays of ornate architecture and lush gardens.

  • Cool off in Kuang Si Falls — Just an hour drive from Luang Prabang, this electric blue multi-tiered waterfall is the perfect place to refresh yourself.

  • Enjoy a sunset cruise on the Mekong River — If you've already marveled at the view from Phousi Hill but want another sunset experience, hop aboard a relaxing sunset cruise and enjoy the view with a cocktail in hand.

  • Alms Giving Ceremony — Every day between 5:30 and 6:30 am, monks and givers complete an exchange that is sacred in Laotian culture. The giver hands the monk food, and in return they receive good karma for their next lives.

  • Street food — There is no shortage of excellent street food in Luang Prabang. The best place to start is at the Luang Prabang Night Market.

  • Utopia Bar & Restaurant — Nestled away from the busy area, this cafe offers tasty food with excellent river views.

  • Indigo House — This hip cafe serves up artfully crafted dishes in a lovely atmosphere. Prices are a bit steep for Lao standards, but the service keeps customers returning.

  • Dyen Sabai — Across the bamboo bridge from the main part of town, this quiet restaurant is perfect for sunset views.

  • Le Banneton Cafe — Laos' former connection to France is often noted in its cuisine, which features items like French bread and pastries. This spot offers a variety of delicious baked goods as well as full breakfast plates.

  • Bamboo Tree Restaurant — This highly-rated restaurant offers a variety of Laotian dishes, as well as cooking classes for those seeking an educational culinary experience.

  • Le Calao — This charming restaurant is an institution for Lao-French cuisine.

  • Buffalo Ice Cream — This unique spot serving up water buffalo ice cream is out of the city but on the route to Kuang Si Falls — perfect for a post-swim treat!
