Day 1: Lagos & Ponta da Piedade

Ponte da Piedade

Praia do Camilo: Start your Algarve adventure at one of its most famous beaches. A wooden staircase leads down to a stunning cove with turquoise waters and golden rock formations.

Ponta da Piedade boat tour: See the Algarve’s most breathtaking coastal cliffs and sea caves by boat or kayak. The views from the land are spectacular, too — walk along the cliffs for incredible photo ops.

Explore Lagos' Old Town: Wander through the charming streets of Lagos, stopping by historic sites like the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira and the Church of Saint Anthony.

Day 2: Benagil Cave & Carvoeiro

Boat tour in Algarve

Benagil Cave: Rent a kayak or book a boat tour to visit Benagil Cave, one of the most famous sea caves in the world. Note: The cave is sometimes closed to protect it. Also, many public boat tours are not allowed to get close to the cave anymore, so you be aware before booking!

Marinha Beach: Just a short drive from Benagil, this is often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Take in the dramatic rock arches and crystal-clear waters.

Lunch in Carvoeiro: A picturesque fishing village with a lively atmosphere. Try O Pescador for delicious seafood.

Day 3: Sagres & the Wild West Coast

Known as the “end of the world,” and well worth the drive, this rugged region offers some of the Algarve’s most dramatic coastal landscapes.

Cape St. Vincent (Cabo de São Vicente): Visit the lighthouse at the south-western-most point of Europe and take in the powerful Atlantic waves crashing against the cliffs.

Praia do Amado or Praia da Arrifana: If you’re up for adventure, these beaches on the Costa Vicentina are perfect for surfing or simply enjoying the raw beauty of the western Algarve.

Lunch at A Sagres: A relaxed spot known for its fresh grilled fish and stunning ocean views.

Visit Sagres Fortress Learn about Portugal’s Age of Discovery and explore the windswept cliffs surrounding this historic site.

Day 4: Tavira & the Eastern Algarve

Visit this charming town that feels like stepping back in time, with cobbled streets, Roman bridges and whitewashed buildings.

Boat Trip to Ilha de Tavira: Take a short ferry or water taxi to this stunning island with endless sandy beaches and laid-back beach bars.

Lunch at Estrela do Mar: Enjoy fresh seafood right by the ocean.

Explore Tavira’s Historic Center: Visit the Tavira Castle, walk along the Roman Bridge and stop by Igreja da Misericórdia for beautiful azulejo tiles.

Need to know

Algarve travel tips:

  • Rent a car: Public transport is limited, and having a car allows you to explore hidden gems.

  • Start early: Beaches fill up fast, especially in peak season.

  • Pack water shoes: Many beaches have rocky areas, especially around the cliffs.

  • Respect nature: Stick to marked paths when exploring cliffs and caves.

  • Cash is useful: While most places accept cards, having cash for parking, small beachside cafes and local markets is helpful.

  • Be mindful of tides: Many beaches are tide-dependent, especially near Benagil and Praia da Marinha, so check tide schedules before visiting.

  • Sun protection is key: The Algarve sun can be intense, so bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.

  • Base yourself in Lagos for a quieter, scenic stay. Stay in Albufeira for more dining and nightlife options.

Best beaches in the Algarve:

  • Praia da Marinha: One of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Portugal.

  • Praia do Camilo: Stunning cliffs and turquoise waters, perfect for photography.

  • Benagil Beach: The starting point for accessing Benagil Cave.

  • Praia da Falésia: Known for its dramatic red cliffs and long stretch of golden sand. (Bonus: Pine Cliffs Resort has direct access to this beach!)

  • Meia Praia: A long, sandy beach perfect for a relaxing day by the water.

  • Praia da Bordeira: A wild and less crowded beach with massive sand dunes.

  • Praia da Rocha: A lively beach near Portimão with beach bars and great views. (Bonus: Kimpton Algarve Atlantico has direct access to this beach!)

  • Praia do Amado: One of the best surfing beaches on the West coast.

  • Ilha de Tavira: A peaceful, remote island beach near Tavira.
