Curator’s statement

Naples is a vibrant city with a rich history as one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. You can explore the ancient ruins of Pompeii by day — yes, that is Mount Vesuvius you can see along the skyline from many lookout points in the city — and sit down to an authentic Italian dinner by night. The stunning architecture that lines the lively streets will take you on a sensory experience that will leave you craving more. My family and I spent one month traveling around Italy and we all appreciated the authenticity and charm that Naples provided.

Things to do in Naples

The image shows a view through an arched stone passageway leading to a courtyard with buildings and greenery.
  • Spend a day exploring Pompeii: The well-preserved Roman city was buried by ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Walking around an ancient city that is so well preserved is an experience that should not be missed.

  • Climb Mount Vesuvius: Visitors can hike up the iconic volcano to take in views of the Bay of Naples and peek inside an actual volcano crater.

  • Wander through Spaccanapoli: This lively street cuts through the heart of Naples and is the perfect starting point for a first-time visit to Naples.

  • Castel Sant’Elmo: Views, views and more views. You can see all of Naples, and beyond, while touring this medieval fortress. Visitors can get some exercise while walking up Vomero Hill, where the castle is perched, or ride the convenient funicular.

  • Eat pizza, of course: Naples is the birthplace of pizza and the delicious pizza found just about anywhere is a wonderful, budget-friendly meal option.

  • Tour Napoli Sotterranea: Considered the underbelly of Naples, this area was once an expansive aqueduct for the city that has served various other purposes over time. This unique tour was a family favorite of ours.

  • Visit Castel dell’Ovo: The oldest standing fortification in Naples, this seaside castle offers an interesting history lesson along with lovely views of the bay.

  • Enjoy a coffee and croissant, anywhere: You’ll be pleasantly surprised by not just how good it tastes but by how cheap it is — compared to the US.

  • Tour the San Carlo Theatre: One of the oldest opera houses in the world, a tour of this stunningly beautiful theater should be on everyone’s “must do” list.

  • Wander around the Royal Palace of Naples: This large but unassuming building from the outside is lavishly decorated on the inside. It’s a perfect escape from the heat if you are visiting during the summer months.

Day trips:

  • Visit the stunning island of Capri: The boat ride from Naples is 50 minutes to one hour and 30 minutes, depending on the vessel you take and the weather conditions. I recommend a full day to allow time to wander aimlessly through the narrow pathways of the town. The Monte Solaro is a must. This single-person chairlift takes you to the highest point on the island for unforgettable panoramic views — go early to avoid a long line. The infamous Blue Grotto, a sea cave known for its mesmerizing blue light, is also a major draw to the area.

Places to eat & drink in Naples

The image shows a group of people dining at a table filled with various foods in a deli.
  • Osteria da Carmela: Small but cozy and inviting space offering authentic Italian cuisine along with top-notch service.

  • Bar Filangieri: Enjoy a delicious coffee and croissant to start your day or a refreshing aperol spritz to start your night.

  • L’ Enoteca Del Grottino: After visiting Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, walk around the corner to this unassuming wine bar and treat yourself to a delicious charcuterie plate. Grab a bottle of wine to-go as the space doubles as a wine shop as well.

  • Hachi Ristorante Giapponese: If you need a break from Italian food, this is your spot. Known for its exceptional Japanese cuisine, including sushi, the presentation and fresh ingredients will leave you craving a second meal here.

  • La Lazzara Trattoria e Pizzeria: A fun ambiance, inside or on the terrace, coupled with traditional Italian cuisine that offers something for everyone — even picky, younger eaters — made this spot a family favorite.

  • Casa Infante: A dessert for every craving! Don’t miss the pistachio gelato.

  • Pizzeria Imperatore 1906: This is a great option to satisfy your pizza craving while exploring the historic center of Naples.

  • Transatlantico Restaurant: If you are craving seafood head here for waterside dining with great views of Mount Vesuvius and moored yachts in the harbor.
