Curator’s statement
My first visit to Essaouira was as a teenager in the late '90s, when I attended one of the early editions of the Gnawa Festival. The groovy, soul-captivating music left an indelible mark on me. Since then, I have returned countless times, drawn back by the city's irresistible charm. Being less than a three-hour drive away from Marrakech, Essaouira has become my frequent escape.

Things to do in Essaouira

While filming his interpretation of Shakespeare's "Othello," Orson Welles described Essaouira as timeless. This sentiment perfectly encapsulates my relationship with the city, capturing the essence of why it continues to provide me with a profound sense of serenity. It is perhaps this timeless quality that gives Essaouira its renowned bohemian and artistic character.
As a travel curator, I see Essaouira as a unique destination because of its rich blend of history, culture, food and activities. Its historic medina, culinary scene and opportunities for kite surfing and other water sports make Essaouira a premium destination for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation.
