Advisor - Visiting Bratislava: Europe's Hidden Gem
Curator’s statement

Bratislava is one of the most underrated cities in Europe! It’s often overshadowed by its more extravagant neighbors like Vienna and Budapest. Bratislava’s cobblestone streets are filled with communist-era architecture, medieval walls and whimsical statues. I instantly fell in love with its scrappy charm and unique history!

Things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia

  • Bratislava Castle — This is the focal point of Bratislava! Its location atop the hill offers amazing panoramic views of the city. Spend some time exploring the museum and baroque garden on the grounds.

  • St. Michael’s Gate — Located on the east side of Bratislava’s Old Town, this is the sole remaining gate to the city, dating back to 1300. You’ll also find more remnants of the city’s original medieval walls and lots of cute restaurants and shops along the cobblestone streets in the area.

  • Old Town Hall – Stroll through Bratislava’s Main Square and Primatial Square on your way to the Old Town Hall. Be sure to visit the observation deck for breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The building also houses the oldest museum in Bratislava, and you can explore the historic prison located in the basement.

  • St. Martin’s Cathedral —This gothic church is one of the oldest and largest in all of Slovakia and was the site of coronations for Hungarian monarchs for hundreds of years dating back to the 1500’s.

  • Whimsical Statues – Keep your eyes peeled around Old Town for the many whimsical statues placed throughout. Notably the most famous: Čumil — the grinning sewer worker peering up from the sidewalk!

  • Church of St. Elizabeth — This Art Nouveau church is worth a quick stop! Painted entirely in shades of blue (inside and out), it’s one of the most unique churches in Europe!

  • UFO Tower — You can’t miss this flying saucer-shaped landmark! It’s a modern addition to the Bratislava skyline and has an observation deck overlooking the Danube. It offers a great view of Bratislava Castle, especially at sunset!

Places to eat & drink in Bratislava, Slovakia

  • Koliba Kamzík Zelená: A cozy local restaurant with ski-chalet vibes! Sample Slovakian classics like garlic soup and smažený sýr (fried sheep cheese). Of course, you have to try the national dish: bryndzové halušky, which is gnocchi in a creamy cheese sauce. We tried it with sausage, and it was amazing!

  • Bratislavsky Mestiansky Pivovar: A cozy brewpub that’s been around since 1752. As you would expect, they have an amazing selection of local beers. We indulged in some more traditional Slovakian dishes. Try the zemiakové knedličky (potato dumplings) with smoked meat. The bryndzové halušky we tried here was also delicious! Reservations are highly recommended.

  • Modrá Hviezda: A medieval tavern with a more modern take on traditional cuisine. The ambiance can’t be beat and the foie gras and rabbit leg we tried were absolutely incredible!

  • Fleur Bakery: A no-frills spot to grab a sweet treat to snack on in Old Town, known for its croissants. Try the almond and pistachio!
