Things to do in New Zealand
North Island: The Shire and Beyond
New Zealand’s North Island is home to Auckland, the country’s largest city. The metropolis is a must-visit, as is the island’s impressive range of landscapes and geographic locations primed for exploration, from the subtropical Bay of Islands to the geothermal marvel Rotorua.
Matamata
Immerse yourself in Hobbiton, the heart of the Shire. Take a guided tour, enjoy a Hobbit-style lunch at the Green Dragon Inn and capture unforgettable photos. Explore the surrounding countryside for additional filming locations.
Tongariro National Park
Embark on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a world-renowned hike through volcanic landscapes that served as Mordor. Visit Mount Ngauruhoe, the iconic Mount Doom, and experience the raw power of nature.
Tawhai Falls in Tongariro National Park was the location for the forbidden pool, where Frodo and Faramir capture Gollum in 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers'. The falls can be reached via a short 10-minute walk, which begins roughly 4 km from Whakapapa Village.
Wellington
More than Middle Earth: On the drive to Wellington, make sure to explore the scenic west coast, including Kāpiti Island, a paradise of native birds with glamping opportunities and nature tours.
Head to Wellington and explore the creative capital of New Zealand and home to Weta Workshop, the special effects studio behind the Lord of the Rings magic. Take a behind-the-scenes tour, visit the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum and enjoy the vibrant city atmosphere. Mount Victoria, aka Hobbiton Woods, is easily accessible from Wellington. Also check out Hutt River, which stood in for River Anduin, Harcourt Park, which transformed into the Gardens of Isengard and Kaitoke Regional Park, which became Rivendell.
The South Island: Rohan in New Zealand
Like its northern neighbor, South Island is a natural paradise brimming with beautiful landscapes. The rolling vineyards, rugged peaks of the Southern Alps, serene lakes and bays, majestic fjords and glaciers are sure to enchant. The island is also home to charming towns and cities — most notably Christchurch and Queenstown — where art, culture and a deep respect for nature combine.
Nelson Tasman
A remarkable, vibrant region where art and businesses thrive together amid a stunning natural landscape. It is the home of Jens Hansen, the goldsmith responsible for creating the 40 different rings used in production. One of the original rings is on display and copies can be bought in nine and 18ct gold.
Canterbury
Much of the Rohan landscape was filmed in the Canterbury region of the South Island. Places like the Canterbury Plains, Poolburn Reservoir and Mount Sunday (Edoras) provided the epic backdrop for the Rohirrim's world. Nothing remains of this set, which took nine months to build. However, the location still has a powerful magic. You can park your vehicle on Hakatere Potts Road and walk to the site. Nearby, Mount Potts Station offers accommodation and a restaurant. For a truly immersive experience, consider horseback riding through these stunning locations. Many local operators offer horseback riding tours, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of the Rohirrim. While you might not encounter any Uruk-hai, you'll surely be surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
Queenstown
Experience the adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown and visit nearby locations like Glenorchy, which serves as Isengard and Lothlórien.
