Where to stay

Day 1: Arrival

A chalet in town is a perfect example of the charm this place has.

You must arrive by train, so fly into Zurich or Milan and train into the glacier paradise. Be aware that the train system moves fast and does not wait for any passenger, so stay alert. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by fabulous views and probably not know where to start. There are no cars in Zermatt, so make sure to grab some cash in the train station and hop into an electric taxi to get to your hotel or chalet. The town has many amazing restaurants to offer and I would suggest stopping by the Brown Cow Pub to grab a burger and beer before going to the Hexan Bar down the road for a drink and good vibes. If you plan on skiing or snowboarding, I would recommend getting all of your equipment that first night so you are ready to go the following morning.

Day 2: Sunnegga & Gorgernat

Fondue at the mountain igloos

Ski passes can be tricky here, so if you plan on hitting the mountain, here are some tips. I would recommend buying your tickets the morning of whenever you plan on being on the mountain because the weather is moody and so are the lifts, so to ensure you will gain as much access as possible, I would make sure the weather matches your intentions.

The mountain is broken up into three main parts: Sunnegga, Rothorn and Gorgernat. Sunnegga connects to the CERVO resort on the left of the Matterhorn, Gorgernat is also the left, but higher up, and Rothorn is the area that gets you the closest to the Matterhorn itself. You are also able to ski in Cervania, Italy, but the last lift closes at 2:30, so make sure you plan accordingly to get back.

My first day out, I would head to Sunnegga and Gorgernat. Grab lunch at the igloos, which you can ski/snowboard to for some drinks and fondue. Ride the red train up higher to ski over to Sunnegga after lunch. Once you've accomplished this area, you can ski down to CERVO Mountain Resort for some fun aprés partying before going to dinner in town.

Day 3: Rothorn

Views of Matterhorn

I would try and hit the mountain again day three. I would head towards Rothorn if the weather permits. You will get insane views of the Matterhorn and be able to ski the longest run on earth, which is over 16 kilometers. You can spend most of your day over here. There are great places to stop all along the mountain and discovering them is half the fun! After skiing, I would end your day at Hennu Stall to aprés and enjoy some music, then ski down into town. Golden Lok is an underground restaurant with delicious Italian food and friendly staff!

Need to know

Zermatt is a place for everyone. It is expensive, so just keep that in mind before going. The town is small and there is so much to see. It is truly a remarkable place and I will never shut up about it!
