Things to do in Wilmington

An upside-down landscape reflects a clear blue sky, buildings, trees and a wooden structure in the water.
  • Wrightsville Beach: Nothing beats a day at Wrightsville Beach. It’s one of the cleanest beaches in North Carolina and perfect for swimming, sunbathing or trying out water sports like paddleboarding. It’s also great for a sunrise walk or jog if you’re an early riser!

  • Battleship North Carolina: Climb aboard a real WWII battleship. The Battleship North Carolina is a must-see for history buffs and, even if you’re not one, walking through the narrow passages and standing in the sailors’ quarters is eye-opening. They do cool reenactments and have some impressive exhibits on board.

  • Airlie Gardens: These gardens are stunning, with seasonal blooms, sculptures and live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. It’s a chill spot for a picnic or photography, and there’s a butterfly house that’ll give you those enchanted forest vibes.

  • Historic Downtown Wilmington: The cobblestone streets of downtown Wilmington are filled with historic homes, quirky shops and great food. Check out the Riverwalk for gorgeous sunset views over the Cape Fear River. Pro tip: Grab some ice cream from Kilwin’s while you stroll!

  • Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts: Catch a show at Thalian Hall, one of the oldest theaters in the U.S. They’ve got everything from live theater, music performances and indie films. It’s a unique place to soak in Wilmington’s artsy side.

  • Cape Fear Museum: This museum has a mix of everything: natural history, Civil War exhibits and a fun interactive science section for kids — or adults who want to feel like kids. It’s a good spot for a rainy day or when you need a break from the sun.

  • Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington: Wilmington is known for its haunted history! The Ghost Walk takes you through the eerie alleys of downtown, with chilling tales of spirits and spooky events. Even if you’re skeptical, it’s still a fun way to see the city at night.

  • Bellamy Mansion Museum: This historic antebellum mansion gives you a glimpse into the darker side of Southern history, including the stories of enslaved people who lived there. The architecture and gardens are gorgeous, and it’s a deep dive into the complicated local past.

  • Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park: If you’re with kids — or just want to feel like one — this is the place! Water slides, go-karts, laser tag, Jungle Rapids is packed with fun. The water park is the main attraction, especially during Wilmington’s warmer months.

  • Boat tours on the Cape Fear River: There are several boat tour options to choose from, and they’re a relaxing way to see Wilmington from the water. Whether you’re into narrated history tours or prefer sunset cruises with a drink in hand, there’s something for everyone.

Have fun exploring Wilmington! It’s got a great mix of beachy, historic and quirky vibes that’ll keep you entertained.

Need to know

Wilmington and the surrounding areas often have seasonal festivals, farmers markets and events. Adding a little section that highlights any annual events — like the Azalea Festival in the spring or the Riverfest in the fall — could be a fun touch. You could even suggest visiting the Riverfront Farmers Market on Saturday mornings for fresh produce and local crafts.

While Wilmington is a smaller city, it packs quite the punch for things to do!
