Curator’s statement

Cassis is the best hidden gem of the French Riviera! It's a gorgeous little fishing village, like a smaller St Tropez, without all the bling. Its harbor is lined with restaurants, in the water bob traditional wooden fishing boats and its rough sand beach is good for swimming in clear blue water. Not known by international tourists, and only visited by the locals, it is THE place to be to truly experience France like the French do.

Things to do in Cassis France

A beautiful dock with multiple fishing boats and houses along the shore.
  • Drive up the Route des Cretes: The Route des Cretes is one of the most scenic coast roads in France. It is often featured on lists of the best coastal drives in the Mediterranean. Although it is not very long, a visit is highly recommended when you are in this region. It will bring you all the way to the top of the tallest cliff in Europe, le Cap Canaille. You can park and go along the edge to take photos. You will have a remarkable view across the bay of La Ciotat, towards Marseille and its islands to the west and towards Bandol to the east.

  • Play a game of Petanque with the locals: Experience the true essence of French leisure as you share moments of joy and competition under the gentle shade of plane trees. Savor the timeless tradition of Petanque as a delightful bridge between travelers and the heartwarming hospitality of the French community.

  • Visit the lighthouse (Le Phare): Located only a few feet away from the port, the lighthouse (le Phare de Cassis) is a must-see when spending the day there. It will also give you one of the best views of the Cap Canaille!

  • Take a kayak in les Calanques: You can visit the calanques via hiking or via boat, but one of the most adventurous ways is by kayak! Check out LoKayakCassis to rent a kayak and explore one of the best locations on the French Riviera.

  • Shop local boutiques: Cassis is a smaller version of St Tropez and has so many small shops and boutiques to visit. From clothing, bathing suits, and shoes, to gifts, sweets and jewelry, everyone can find something to buy in Cassis.

  • Spend the afternoon on the beach du Corton: Whether you're strolling along the water's edge, taking a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters or simply savoring a seaside picnic, Beach du Corton promises an idyllic retreat. It will leave you with cherished memories of a tranquil and sun-soaked coastal escape.
