Day 1: Srah Srang, Ta Prohm and The Cambodian Circus

An ancient temple entrance intertwined with sprawling tree roots, evoking a sense of history and nature’s embrace.

Siem Reap is hot or really hot depending on what time of year you are visiting, so you are going to want to start early in the morning to avoid being outside at peak hours of the sun.

Get out early to avoid the sun and the crowds. I recommend starting around 6:30am and hitting up Srah Srang for your first stop — a tranquil reservoir located in the Angkor Archaeological Park. Built during the 10th century by King Rajendravarman II, it served as a royal bathing pool and is surrounded by a sandstone terrace. A peaceful setting for visitors. It's a great place to enjoy stunning sunrises or the early morning light.

Next stop Ta Prohm - also known as the "Tomb Raider Temple," - a mesmerizing temple complex. Built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by King Jayavarman VII, Ta Prohm is renowned for its captivating fusion of ancient architecture and the encroaching embrace of massive tree roots, the likes of which you have never seen before. Ta Prohm offers a unique glimpse into the power of nature and the passage of time, making it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring the wonders of Angkor, and certainly my favorite spot.

Spend the afternoon someplace cool and relaxing. Have lunch in any number of lovely restaurants, which I have listed below. Have a swim, etc.

In the evening, treat yourself to a show by The Cambodian Circus — blending visual arts, traditional music with amazing and classic circus skills like juggling, contortionists and acrobatics that will delight travelers of all ages.

Day 2: Angkor Wat and Artisans Angkor

A tranquil sunrise over Angkor Wat, with the temple’s silhouette mirrored in the water.

Up and at it even earlier to catch the crown jewel of Siem Reap at its best! A sunrise tour of Angkor Wat will not disappoint! Angkor Wat is a masterpiece of Khmer architecture and the largest (Hindu) religious monument in the world, boasting intricate carvings, towering spires and expansive galleries that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Khmer Empire. It is truly a breathtaking masterpiece, both spiritually and aesthetically.

Be sure to get there before sunrise to secure yourself a great spot.

Again, leave the afternoon to skip the heat - visit the Old Market to snag yourself some local specialties like Cashews, Pepper and Chilis.

Next off to Artisans Angkor — a workshop that aims to revive traditional Khmer craftsmanship while providing employment opportunities for rural Cambodians. Specializing in producing high-quality Cambodian handicrafts, including silk products, stone and wood carvings, lacquerware and silverware.

Day 3: Port of Mechrey

A peaceful sunset over a still lake, with the sun’s reflection creating a path of light across the water.

A short drive out of the city will take you to Port of Mechrey, a small, rarely visited fishing village on the edge of the great lake. You can arrange a special boat to pick you up here and tour through the authentic village of Prek Toal — a permanent floating settlement complete with church, schools and village stores. You can interact with the local inhabitants and explore a community that has remained unchanged for centuries on the lake.
