Curator’s statement

Did you know that Curaçao is one of three ABC Caribbean islands? Or that their beautifully colored houses that we know today were once all white? Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and are located in the southern Carribbean Sea, off the coast of Venezuela. The houses of Curacao were once so white that a 19th-century doctor noticed that the governor had eye problems caused by the reflection of the sunlight on the white walls. Therefore, the governor asked for colored walls. Eventually, this was required. This law is no longer in place, but the custom remains.

Beaches

  • Playa Kenepa Grande: A stunningly beautiful beach, excellent for relaxing, sunbathing, swimming and exploring marine life.

  • Playa Porto Mari: Whether you're looking to relax on the beach, explore underwater life or enjoy a meal with a view, Playa Porto Mari is a popular destination that caters to a variety of interests — including swimming with the piggies!

  • Playa Jeremi: A beautiful, secluded beach located on the northwest side of Curaçao, with clear blue waters and the most breathtaking sunset!

  • Mambo Beach: Considered the most popular and vibrant beach in Curaçao. It offers everything from beach clubs and restaurants to water activities to shopping and nightlife.

Culture & sights

  • Queen Emma Bridge: The famous floating bridge of Willemstad, also known as The Swinging Old Lady, this is a must-see while in Curaçao.

  • Hato Caves: Impressive caves known for their stalactites, stalagmites and unique formations. These caves were once used by the indigenous Arawak people and later served as a refuge for escaped slaves during the colonial period.

  • Landhuis Chololobo: While France has Champagne and Portugal has Port, Curaçao is famous for its Blue Curaçao, which is produced and bottled right on the island at Landhuis Chobolobo, home of the distillery that manufactures the genuine Curaçao liqueur.

  • Kura Hulanda: Visit Kura Hulanda and learn all about Curaçao's slave trade.

  • Shete Boka National Park: Known for its rugged coastline, limestone buffs and a series of inlets or "bokas" where the sea powerfully crashes into the shore, creating a spectacular spray and natural blowholes.

Places to eat & drink in Curaçao

An outdoor patio with a rustic wooden table set against a backdrop of vibrant greenery and a clear blue sky.
  • Saint Tropez Ocean Club: Do yourself a favor and try the red snapper on the dinner menu. You won't regret it! Reservations highly recommended.

  • Sal the Kitchen: They had me with their espresso martini - affogato served with vanilla-cherry ice cream.

  • Hofi Cas Cora: You know breakfast will be good when you're dining at a farm and all items on the menu are farm-to-table. Highly recommend the seasonal omelet, brunchwich and their French toast with seasonal jam.

  • Soi95: Best Asian food on the island. When making a reservation, make sure to ask for a rooftop table.

  • The Pancake Sensation: The Dutch love their pancakes, and you won't go wrong here! They offer a great selection of add-ons.

  • Mood Marina: Everything on their menu is delicious, but the drinks are on point. Must try the Co-Haku and The Golden Hour. You'll thank me later.

  • Bodega Siete Gotas: Their concept is sharing is caring, so order away to your heart's delight.

  • Cabana Beach: Try their mixed platter of bitterballen, frikandellen, kaassoufflé, chicken nuggets and Vietnamese spring rolls and don't forget the chicken satay.
