Curator’s statement

Paris captivated me from my very first visit with its perfect blend of artistic grandeur and everyday Parisian charm. I love walking among the grand museums and exploring the charming neighborhoods where real Parisian life happens. What makes this city special is how it rewards curious travelers who venture beyond the tourist spots. My favorite Paris memories come from balancing cultural visits with long café stops and simply watching local life unfold around me.

Things to do in Paris

Must-see museums

  • Musée de l'Orangerie: This intimate museum houses Monet's breathtaking Water Lilies in two oval rooms designed by the artist himself. The paintings wrap around you in natural light — it's an immersive experience that photos can't capture. The basement's collection of impressionist and post-impressionist works is equally impressive!

  • Dior Museum: Located in Christian Dior's elegant townhouse, this museum showcases the legendary designer's creations alongside rotating exhibitions. The couture pieces displayed here are absolute works of art, and the building itself feels like stepping into fashion history.

  • Picasso Museum: Set in the gorgeous 17th-century Hôtel Salé mansion, this museum houses the world's largest Picasso collection. The chronological layout lets you see his entire artistic evolution, from early realistic works to his most experimental pieces. The courtyard alone is worth a visit!

  • Louvre: Skip the crowds by targeting specific exhibits like the "Exposition de Couture" and entering through the quieter Porte des Lions. Pro tip: visit Wednesday or Friday evenings when it's open late and much less packed.

Neighborhoods to explore

  • Montmartre: Take a walking tour to discover the artistic soul of Paris beyond the touristy spots around Sacré-Cœur. Stay for sunset from the Basilica steps — the view over Paris is absolutely magical!

  • Île Saint-Louis: This tiny island feels like stepping back in time with its 17th-century architecture. The perfect place to stroll after seeing Notre Dame, with the bonus of amazing Berthillon ice cream.

  • Le Marais: Wander these medieval streets on Sunday when the neighborhood really comes alive while other parts of Paris quiet down. Great for boutique shopping and people-watching at sidewalk cafés.

  • Rue Montorgueil: My favorite market street for experiencing authentic Parisian daily life. It's filled with specialty food shops and cafés where locals shop for dinner ingredients and catch up with neighbors.

Cool experiences

  • Giverny half-day trip: Visit Monet's actual gardens where he painted his famous water lilies. It's an easy trip from Paris and feels like walking into one of his paintings!

  • Croissant baking class: Learn the secrets of perfect French pastry with a classically trained chef in an intimate kitchen studio. You'll master the art of laminated dough and take home your buttery creations. The techniques you learn will completely change how you see these seemingly simple pastries!

  • Wine tasting at Cave des Louvres: This atmospheric wine cellar near the Louvre offers guided tastings that help demystify French wines. Their passionate sommeliers take you through different regions and teach you how to identify tasting notes without any pretension.

  • Live jazz at Le Caveau de la Huchette: Experience authentic jazz in this underground cave-like venue that's been around since 1946. The stone walls create amazing acoustics, and you can dance if you're feeling brave!

Day trip

  • Giverny: Monet's gardens are just a short trip from Paris and absolutely worth it, especially in spring when the flowers explode with color. The Japanese garden with its green bridge looks exactly like his paintings!

Places to eat & drink in Paris

Morning fuel

  • Back in Black: This hip specialty coffee shop serves some of the best third-wave coffee in Paris, with single-origin beans and perfect brewing methods. Their avocado toast makes a great light breakfast!

  • Noir Coffee Bar: A cozy café where locals get their morning caffeine fix away from tourist spots. Their pastries come from top Paris bakeries, and the baristas create beautiful latte art worth photographing.

  • Poilâne: This world-famous bakery makes sourdough bread that Parisians line up for daily. Their apple turnovers and tiny butter cookies (punitions) are perfect breakfast companions to their exceptional coffee.

Lunch spots

  • Brasserie Rosie: This gorgeous neo-brasserie in Bastille serves updated French classics in a stylish setting with vintage touches. Their weekday lunch menu offers incredible value, and the herbed butter with house bread is addictive.

  • Le Pantruche: This modern bistro in the 9th arrondissement serves sophisticated yet unpretentious food with seasonal ingredients. Their soufflé grand-marnier is legendary and worth saving room for!

  • Au Bon Crus: This authentic neighborhood bistro serves perfectly executed, traditional French dishes with a simple and consistent menu. Their steak-frites and roast chicken are reliable classics, complemented by an excellent wine list that focuses on good-value options. It's a no-frills spot beloved by locals for its honest cooking.

Dinner & drinks

  • Flore en l'Île: This charming restaurant on Île Saint Louis offers classic French cuisine with a view of Notre Dame. Their duck confit and crème brûlée are standouts, and the riverside location can't be beat.

  • Frenchie: One of Paris' most sought-after tables, this tiny restaurant serves innovative, market-driven food in a friendly setting. If you can't get a reservation at the restaurant, try their more accessible wine bar across the street.

  • Un Jour à Peyrassol — Restaurant de Truffes: This elegant spot celebrates the truffle in every dish. From truffle pasta to truffle-infused desserts, it's a fragrant celebration of this luxury ingredient in a sophisticated setting.

Sweet treats & goûter

  • Jeffrey Cagnes: Skip the overhyped Cedric Grolet... this pastry shop from a former Stohrer chef creates modern takes on French classics. His Paris-Brest and fruit tarts are works of art that taste even better than they look.

  • Poilâne: Beyond breakfast, their butter cookies and apple tarts make a perfect afternoon snack when you need a pick-me-up during sightseeing.

  • Berthillon: Paris' famous ice cream maker creates intensely flavored scoops from seasonal ingredients. Their salted caramel and wild strawberry are legendary and perfect for an afternoon treat while strolling Île Saint Louis.

Need to know

It's a misconception that the French are rude. The biggest unlock you can have is saying "bonjour" first and foremost, as a sign of respect for their culture. You'll find that Parisians are much more friendly after this simple, polite greeting!

Don't overplan! Some of your best memories will come from spontaneous discoveries. Leave time to simply wander neighborhoods and sit at cafés watching Parisian life happen around you.

Try the afternoon "goûter" tradition — around 4 pm, Parisians pause for a coffee and sweet treat. It's the perfect pick-me-up during a busy day of exploring.

Paris is all about the details. Remember to look up at the architecture, peek through open doorways into hidden courtyards and notice the small touches that make this city so special.
