Things to do in the US Virgin Islands

Exploring Virgin Islands National Park

Begin your adventure by flying into Cyril E King Airport on St. Thomas, where you'll be greeted by warm tropical breezes and stunning views. I highly recommended renting a car for exploring the islands, especially opting for a 4x4 vehicle to navigate the rugged terrain. Keep in mind that driving is on the left side of the road — a detail that may be an adjustment for travelers from the US!

You can stay in either St. Thomas or St. John, with easy access to both islands via the car ferry allowing you to seamlessly explore the wonders of each. Vacationing in these islands offers a familiar experience for US visitors, as they are US territories. Expect to use US currency, and it’s highly likely that your phone service will work (though check with your provider beforehand).

While on St. John, which is about 60% national park land, you can immerse yourself in the island's natural beauty by embarking on two unforgettable hiking adventures. The drive from the car ferry to the east side of the island isn’t long, taking only about 30 minutes. While the drive may be treacherous at times (hence the 4x4), the views are truly unforgettable! Even if you don’t plan to hike, I still recommend taking a driving tour of the island to fully appreciate its stunning scenery. Plus with this being protected land, we saw wildlife everywhere!

The Ram Head Trail, beginning on the southeastern most point of the island, is a 2.3-mile round trip offering a moderately challenging trek along Saltpond Bay and ending in awe-inspiring aerial views from the top of Ram's Hill. When you arrive at the trailhead, you may not be sure you’re in the right place due to the remote nature of this hike. Make sure you download an All Trails map before leaving your hotel to follow along as you hike this out-and-back.

For those seeking a longer excursion, the Reef Bay Trail is a perfect 4.4-mile round trip through lush forests with plenty of wildlife sightings. You will come upon a deserted sugar mill, with lots of old buildings to explore. The trail ends at the secluded Reef Bay Beach, making it the perfect place to stop for a snack while enjoying the beautiful ocean views! Don’t let the hike back catch you off-guard, as it’s uphill on the way back to your car.

No visit to St. John would be complete without basking in the splendor of Trunk Bay. With its pristine white sands and turquoise waters, Trunk Bay is a snorkeler's paradise. Explore the underwater snorkel trail, which is a 0.2 mile designated Virgin Islands National Park trail. You can rent snorkel equipment and beach chairs at the Bay, and enjoy food and drinks from the onsite concessions. Voted one of the top 10 beaches by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, the natural beauty of Trunk Bay will make it so you never want to leave!

Other Things to do in the US Virgin Islands

By far one of the highlights of our trip was the Snorkel Cat excursion, departing from St. Thomas Margaritaville Resort. This all-inclusive day trip takes you to two snorkeling spots where you can marvel at vibrant coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. The crew for our voyage was amazing, complemented by fresh food and drinks served throughout the day. Our adventure was capped off watching a baby orca whale breach through the waters up ahead of our boat, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that even the crew was amazed to see.

For a self-guided adventure, embark off the coast of St. Thomas with a jet ski rental. Explore the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean at your own pace, past scenic coves, secluded beaches, and tropical landscapes. Whether you're seeking adrenaline-pumping adventure or serene coastal views, jet skiing offers an unforgettable way to experience the beauty of the Virgin Islands from a different perspective.

Just steps away from the Cruz Bay Ferry Dock in St. John, you'll find a vibrant array of shops offering everything from local crafts to designer boutiques. Browse through charming storefronts filled with unique souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, and artwork, immersing yourself in the island's shopping scene before or after your ferry journey.

Places to eat & drink in the US Virgin Islands

Skinny Legs (St. John): Recommended to us by a local, Skinny Legs is a beloved local hangout known for its laid-back atmosphere, juicy burgers, and ice-cold drinks. With its colorful Caribbean décor and friendly staff, this iconic establishment embodies the relaxed vibe of St. John, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration. Stop by after you hike the Rams Head Trail, or while exploring the east side of the island via car.

Sunset Grille (St. Thomas): Perched on the waterfront in Secret Harbour Beach Resort, Sunset Grille offers stunning ocean views and local cuisine. From fresh seafood to juicy steaks, the restaurant's diverse menu features dishes crafted with locally sourced ingredients, ensuring a memorable dining experience against the backdrop of a Caribbean sunset. If you’re lucky (like we were), the catch of the day may be fresh lobster pulled right from the nearby waters that day.

Raw Sushi and Sake Bar (St. Thomas): If you have a taste for something different, look no further than Raw Sushi and Sake Bar. Located in the heart of Charlotte Amalie, this chic eatery combines traditional Japanese flavors with innovative twists, serving up an array of sushi rolls, sashimi, and specialty cocktails. With its sleek ambiance and creative offerings, Raw Sushi and Sake Bar offers a unique dining experience in St. Thomas.
