Things to do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

A view from a suspended bridge high above the lush rainforest canopy on a bright sunny day.

Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges

Walking in the Costa Rican treetops in the early morning air as toucans fly over your head is a moment you'll never forget. Several hours can be spent walking on the impressive hanging bridges and observing exotic plants and animals. It also offers one of the best and most expansive views of the Arenal Volcano for all of those memorable pictures.

Tips for the Hanging Bridges — Get there early! Not only will you avoid the crowds and the heat, animals are much more active in the morning and you will likely see more wildlife. I saw coatis, toucans and so many other beautiful birds. Bring your binoculars!

Sloth Watching Trail

Seeing a sloth in the wild is just as cute as it is exciting. The thing is, sloths can be tricky to spot since they are so great at camouflaging and are often high in the trees. Taking a sloth watching tour alongside an expert guide with a telephoto lens allows you to be able to see sloths and other animals you may miss on your own.

Tabacon Hot Springs

Even if you're not staying at the hotel, you can visit Tabacon Hot Springs on a day pass and enjoy a day of luxury. Marvel in the largest flowing hot springs in the area, thanks to the Arenal Volcano, as you explore over 20 natural pools.

El Salto Rope Swing

For a fun and free activity, head to the El Salto rope swing to swim in the refreshing river, see the El Salto waterfall and jump in the river from the rope swing if you're feeling brave. This is a wonderful afternoon activity to wind down with after an adventurous morning.

Tip for El Salto Bring water shoes! It is very fun to walk through the water down the river, but it will be very slippery without water shoes.

Take a Chocolate Tour

Every chocolate lover will appreciate the Don Olivo Chocolate Tour, a family-run business. Located in the heart of La Fortuna, you will learn about where your chocolate comes from and get to see the different plants and organic crops. You will, of course, also get to enjoy different chocolates, hot chocolate and fresh fruit.

Chocolate Tour Tip — This is a very accessible activity that can accommodate wheelchairs, strollers and travelers of all ages.

Explore the Town

The town of La Fortuna is very picturesque, featuring a well-manicured town square with the Arenal Volcano being the focal point. There are many fun shops to explore and it is very walkable. Small, family-run restaurants (called sodas) can be found around town and offer an affordable and delicious meal after a long day of adventuring.

Town Tip — Take advantage of the many fruit stands around town and load up on your favorite fruit. You'll learn that the pineapple in Costa Rica is the best pineapple in the world but also make an effort to try the papayas, mangos and dragon fruit.

Zip-line Through the Rainforest

Zip-lining is the ultimate adrenaline rush and a must-do while in Costa Rica. You'll get to zip across more than 10 cables and walk over a suspension bridge all nestled in the lush green rainforest. This is a fun experience for all ages, and a big hit with the whole family.

Zip-lining Tip — Always make sure you bring a rain jacket with you and extra bug spray while you're in the rainforest. The weather can be unpredictable and it's not uncommon to experience a lot of different weather in one day. The good news is that if it rains, it likely won't be raining all day, so don't plan your activities around the weather, just be prepared!

Kayak or Paddle Board Lake Arenal

There's not many places in the world where you can paddle with a volcano right next to you. The Arenal Volcano looks particularly majestic from the water, and experienced paddlers and beginners can enjoy a lake day, Costa Rican style. This is an easy stop after visiting the hanging bridges, and even if you don't decide to go on the lake, it is worth a drive just to see the views.

Places to eat & drink in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Colorful market display featuring fresh watermelons, mangoes, and dragon fruit, showcasing the vibrant bounty of tropical fruits.

Red Frog Coffee Roasters — A delicious and affordable spot for lunch or dinner. The food and vegetables are fresh with generous portions. This is also a great spot to enjoy a milkshake after a busy day!

Organico Fortuna — Yummy and fresh spot for organic and delicious food. They have a great selection of gluten-free options, with my personal favorites being the Happiness Bowl and the Raw Brownie.

The Lava Lounge — A fun, lively option for live music while you enjoy a delicious dinner.

Good Protein — There's no better place to cool down with a delicious smoothie or protein-packed bowl than Good Protein. It's another great option for those with a gluten sensitivity as they have gluten-free waffles and other choices.

El Chante Verde Restaurant — Sit around beautiful local plants and enjoy some of the best table-side guacamole you've ever had. This is also a great spot to grab a fresh burger after a long day of hiking or exploring.

Chocolate Fusión — Located in downtown La Fortuna, this chocolate shop has an expansive amount of unique and gourmet chocolates and truffles. My personal favorites are the coconut and pineapple chocolates.

Don Rufino Restaurante — A refined, local favorite with an impressive menu ranging from seafood to grilled options.
