Curator’s statement

Alaska, the 49th State of the United States, has always been a captivating destination for travelers and explorers because of its well-known vast and mostly untouched wilderness. I believe Alaska deserves its designation "The Last Frontier" and should be on everyone's bucket list. Me and my family especially love what Skagway, AK, has to offer. However, as Skagway is landlocked, the only fun way to reach it is through a cruise. We chose the cruise itinerary aboard Norwegian Encore because it offered longer stays in Skagway and Juneau (Alaska's Capital) and the cruise ship was permitted to enter the Glacier Bay National Park (access to see Glacier Bay is regulated each year to preserve the natural environment). I recommend this cruise (in May) to all my guests as throughout the whole journey - everything was a memorable adventure.

Things to do in Alaska Cruise

view with mountains covered with snow

Day 1 (Embarkation Day) - Our round-trip cruise departed from the Port of Seattle, Washington (Pier 66). There are numerous actives aboard the cruise ship but I recommend to all my guests to not miss the traditional sail away party after enjoying the welcoming food on Deck 16 (The Garden Cafe). Experienced Tip: Secure a place where the Space Needle is visible. Nothing beats (complimentary) dining with a view!

Day 2 (Sea Day) - Guest can choose to leisurely explore the cruise ship! We specifically took this time to watch the fruit carving show with the kids on Deck Six (The Atrium) in the morning, enjoy the Kid's Aqua Park (and views) on Deck 16 (we had a sunny and bearable weather - thankfully) in the afternoon and watched the surprisingly interactive broadway show "Choir of Man" in the evening on Deck Seven (Encore Theater). Experienced Tip: We were told that whale sighting is always a possibility while on an Alaskan cruise. Our sailing did not disappoint. Thus, bringing binoculars is highly recommended not only catch these gentle aquatic giants in action but also to admire the iconic Bald Eagles and breathtaking glaciers!

Day 3 (Juneau, AK) - Unlike other cruise ships, Norwegian Encore was docked a bit far (AJ Dock) from downtown. However, shuttles are available to take guests to downtown. It was a beautiful spring day, so we decided to walk to downtown for 20 minutes. From downtown, we started our sightseeing tour to explore Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center and hike the scenic trail (approximately two miles round trip) to see and touch Mendenhall Lake, Nugget Falls and, possibly, a huge iceberg! The trail was relatively flat and manageable (even with a baby stroller). The views from the Mendenhall Shores are stunning. The kids had so much fun playing with the cold water and before saying goodbye, we took some beautiful family photos to treasure. On our way back, we has some eagle sightings. When we got back to downtown, we had plenty of time to explore local shops and enjoy local food. In addition, I would recommend to my guests to ride the Mt. Roberts Tramway (Goldbelt Tram) if the day is clear during their visit.

Day 4 (Skagway) - This landlocked port of call is known for its fascinating and rich Klondike Gold Rush history, historic and well-preserved architecture from the Gold Rush era, scenic White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad, and challenging scenic Chilkoot Trail. There are so many Skagway experiences to choose from and we opted to do the three-hour Skagway Summit Scenic Drive with live commentary from a knowledgeable tour guide. We had three stops and were able to appreciate and take photos of few waterfalls, majestic Sawtooth Mountain, Klondike Highway, William Moore Bridge and famous "Welcome to Alaska and the Gateway to the Klondike" sign near the US - Canadian Border.

Day 5 (Glacier Bay) - During this day, everything seems surreal. Guests not only get to see the Glacier Bay but also Margerie Glacier, John Hopkins Glacier and Grand Pacific Glacier (from a distance). Guests with balcony cabins can absorb the stunning views from their private spaces as the ship turns around. Other guests can go to the ships bow (like we did) or to Deck 15 (Observation Deck) where comfortable chairs as right in front of floor to ceiling windows. Constant supply of delicious snacks and beverages are also served on Deck 15. Experience tip: I highly recommend guests to bring selfie sticks.

Day 6 (Ketchikan) - We only had three hours to explore the "Salmon Capital of the World" on this itinerary. However, three hours is enough have a self-guided tour to explore Creek Street, the historic boardwalk built over Ketchikan Creek which was once a red-light district during the Gold Rush era. Unfortunately, we were not able to witness actual salmon run over the creek that usually happens during late June through early September (depending on the type of salmon). Another Ketchikan activity I would recommend to my guests is the highly entertaining "Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show" or visit the Totem Bright Historical Park. Tired from our walking tour, we chose to relax in our cabin and watched one of the free movies. We watched the fun version of "Deal or No Deal" on Deck Six (The Atrium) while on our way to dinner.

Day 7 (Victoria, BC, Canada)
- After breakfast, we dropped our two kids (two and six) at the complementary "Splash Academy" while we explored the Gift Shops for ship specific souvenirs. After lunch, we picked up the kids to admire the masterpieces exhibited by Park West Gallery and then listened to live music by the pool on Deck 16. We docked a bit late on this day and similar to Ketchikan, have only a few hours to explore this elegant city. We opted to have a good family stroll by the scenic Inner Harbour and treated ourselves to a variety of baked goods and pastries. Another option that I would recommend is riding one of the carriage rides while exploring the city's scenic and historic sites.

In addition, I recommend to my guests to add on their list a visit to "The Cavern Club" on Deck Eight for a night of live performances (often paying tribute to The Beatles) and dancing.

Places to eat & drink in Alaska Cruise

We mainly opted for complimentary meals aboard Norwegian Encore - which were very good. However, I would like to specially mention the following:

Tracy's King Crab Shack (Juneau, AK) - for a taste of fresh and succulent Alaskan King Crab legs.

Red Onion Saloon (Skagway, AK) - the place typically serve American and Alaskan dishes but guests will appreciate this two-in-one establishment (museum and restaurant) as the historic decor and atmosphere will take them back to the Gold Rush era.

Klondike Doughboy (Skagway, AK) - the only place where you can try the famous and delicious fry bread.

Cagney's Steakhouse (Norwegian Encore Deck Eight) - this is a great specialty restaurant that offers delicious premium steaks and seafood while celebrating special occasions with family and friends.
