Best Bars in Barcelona

Paradiso Cocktail Bar is a hidden gem where mixology artistry and a captivating ambiance come together.

Bobby’s Free

I don’t want to ruin too much of the experience, but I’ll share the basics. Bobby’s Free is disguised as a barbershop. If you want to make it past that point, you’ve gotta know the password. (Hint: You can find it in the Instagram bio of @bobbysfree). Get it right, and you’ll be welcomed into a speakeasy straight out of the 1920’s. It’s got unique vintage decor and an air of mystery, but the real star of the show is the mixology.

The cocktails are both beautiful and delicious. Options change often, but on my last visit I saw a drink fully disguised as popcorn; a drink presented inside a set of nesting dolls; and a smoked drink emerging from a treasure chest. My own drink came in a tiki mug and was served with a cake pop on the side. Bobby’s Free is definitely the place to go for something unexpected.

Location: C/ de Pau Claris, 85, 08010

Orient Express

I dream of taking a luxury train journey someday, but until that time comes, Orient Express (the bar) will have to do! As you may have guessed from its name, this bar is themed around the original Orient Express train. The decor transports you to a vintage train station and you receive your prepared drink via an electric model train.

What makes the cocktails unique at Orient Express is that they are customized just for you. You’re given a passport where you can enter your preferred alcohol(s), flavors and any other preferences, and the mixologists work their magic. If you don’t like what you receive, they’ll try again!

If you’re looking for a cool theme and you’re up for a bit of an adventure with your drinks, Orient Express is not to be missed.

Location: Carrer del Comte d'Urgell, 134, 08011

Paradiso

Like Bobby’s Free, what you see at first is not what you get. You access Paradiso through the refrigerator inside a pastrami shop, though no password is necessary here. Once you step inside, you’ll be transported to a cocktail lover’s dream unlike any other. Don’t just take my word for it. Paradiso achieved the coveted #1 spot on the World’s 50 Best Bars list in 2022.

Paradiso is more than just your average bar. It also offers small-group classes for mixologists of all levels. Whether you want to learn the fundamentals of cocktail-making or you want to learn how to infuse your existing skills with more creativity, Paradiso has an option for you. The staff can also arrange private tastings for larger groups.

If you’re a fan of scotch, you can make a reservation for a Thursday or Friday night Macallan Experience. This sensory journey takes you through six cocktails paired with six different dishes (note that I didn’t just say “taste” - you’ll be using all of your senses in this experience) You’ll enjoy the whole thing in a secret room.

Location: Carrer de Rera Palau, 4, 08003

Hemingway Gin & Cocktail Bar

Maybe themed bars aren’t your thing and you’re really just after a good drink. Hemingway is your place. Be warned - it’s small and cozy, but that’s part of the charm. Hemingway specializes in rare gins, but that’s far from the only type of alcohol they serve. You can choose from their extensive menu, or ask for one of your favorite classic cocktails.

One of the cool things about Hemingway is the way drinks are presented. Yours may be served in a copper ladle, in a beaker, in a shell or in any other creative vessel the mixologists can think of. That’s about the only gimmick you’ll find at Hemingway. This truly is a straightforward bar focused on great service and great drinks.

Location: C/ de Muntaner, 114, 08036 (Basement)
