Things to do in New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Swamp Tour: Go see some wildlife on a swamp tour. When we went, we saw snakes, wild boars, tons of different kinds of birds and alligators. This tour is not in the city center, but there are many options that include transportation from the city.

  • The National World War II Museum: This is one of the most interesting museums I have ever been to. You could spend a whole day here. There is so much to see.

  • Mardi Gras Museum: Learn about the history of Mardi Gras and see some of the amazing floats. This museum is located across the river, so you may need to take a quick Uber if you haven't rented a car.

  • Jazz Fest: Usually at the end of April, the Jazz Fest has several stages you can check out as well as amazing booths selling delicious food.

  • Cemetery Tour: Step on a horse-drawn carriage and take a tour around town that includes seeing one of the most famous cemeteries in the country. You can find the carriages lined up across the street from Cafe Du Monde.

  • Preservation Hall: Make reservations to hear some authentic jazz. The room is small and there isn't enough seating for everyone, so be prepared to stand the whole time.

  • Riverboat Tour: Take a ride on the famous New Orleans riverboat on the Mississippi River. It’s located right in front of Cafe Du Monde.

  • New Orleans Garden District Walking Tour: Take a step back in time and explore the Garden District and its historic homes.

  • French Market: Walk through the French Market and see a variety of vendors selling crafts, jewelry and more.

Places to eat & drink in New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Commander’s Palace: When I think of classic New Orleans cuisine, Commander’s Palace comes to mind. Don’t miss their 25-cent martinis during weekday lunch!

  • Court of Two Sisters: Another classic New Orleans establishment. They have a great brunch buffet.

  • Pat O’Briens: Grab a hurricane here and enjoy their nice patio.

  • Cafe Du Monde: There will be a line and it will be worth it. The beignets are hot and delicious. Be prepared for powdered sugar to get all over you!

  • Carousel Bar: One of the most unique bars in New Orleans is at the Monteleone Hotel. Sit on a rotating carousel and enjoy a sazerac.

  • Willa Jean: Enjoy some great biscuits and gravy or braised short ribs and grits at this great breakfast spot.

  • Mothers: I love Mother’s casual authentic New Orleans atmosphere. Their po-boys and gumbo are out of this world!

  • Chemin a la Mer: Located on the 5th floor of the Four Seasons hotel and features panoramic views of the Mississippi.

  • Drago’s: They are known for their famous charbroiled oysters.

  • Mopho: If you need a break from the classics, check out Mopho for some pho. On Saturdays, they usually roast a whole pig!

Need to know

Fall is my favorite season to visit New Orleans. The French Quarter is even spookier than usual, and the weather is perfect.
