Things to do in Athens
Acropolis & Parthenon: Explore the Acropolis and see the Parthenon, a well-preserved temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.
Walking Food Tour: Everyone I've talked to that has been to Athens has RAVED about the walking food tours. You'll discover hidden gems, from family-owned tavernas to modern eateries that reinvent traditional dishes. You'll get to taste all the amazing dishes that Greece is known for like souvlaki and moussaka. Plus, your guide will show you more of the local spots and dishes. Trust me, a food tour is always a good idea.
Explore Plaka: Wander through the charming historic district, the Plaka neighborhood, with its narrow streets and neoclassical architecture.
Ancient Agora: Explore Ancient Agora of Athens, an ancient marketplace.
Acropolis Museum: Discover artifacts and sculptures from the Acropolis site at the Acropolis Museum.
Gazi District: Experience Athens' nightlife and vibrant arts scene in the Gazi District.
Mount Lycabettus: Hike or take a funicular to the top of Mount Lycabettus for city views.
Walk Down Dionysiou Areopagitou Street: Stroll down Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, lined with cafes and shops.
Day Trips
Athens Riviera: When people think of Athens, they usually think of history and great food. But most people don't realize that the Athens Riviera is a whole different side of Athens. Part of the Mediterranean, the Athens Riviera is an escape from the hustle of the city, and a world of luxury and relaxation. There are fun and glamorous beach clubs and great waterfront cafes. If you have time, I would definitely add the Athens Riviera to your Athens travel guide.
Places to eat & drink in Athens
Restaurants:
Dopios: Be sure to try the Dolmadakias (grape leaves), tzatziki avocado, humus, and lamb sweetbreads. The food was all amazing, but the grape leaves specifically were the best I've ever had (and I'm part Greek!)
Diporto: Traditional taverna in the heart of Athens.
Tzitzikas kai Mermigas: Serves classic mezze & hot Mediterranean cuisine.
Seychelles: Greek soul food.
GH Attikos: Traditional Greek food, plus a rooftop with a view of the Acropolis.
Zillers Roof Garden: Michelin-starred restaurant in the heart of Athens, with views of the Acropolis.
Bars:
The Clumsies: Cocktail bar in the center of Athens.
A is for Athens: Cocktail bar and restaurant with a gorgeous view of the Parthenon.
