Things to do in North Carolina

Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach is perfect for couples looking for a mix of relaxation, coastal charm and unforgettable moments. This guide highlights my top recommendations for a stress-free and romantic vacation. Filled with scenic strolls, cozy dining spots and unique experiences to enjoy together. While this trip leans more toward relaxation and quality time over nightlife, I'll have a separate guide for those looking for a livelier evening scene.
Wrightsville Beach: A Secluded Seaside Escape: Wrightsville Beach is pure magic, especially at sunrise, when the sky is painted in soft pastels, and the world feels quiet and untouched. For my clients, I offer exclusive access to a hidden, secluded section of the beach. This is a private oasis with crystal-clear waters, gentle waves and abundant sea life. For the perfect romantic moment, bring a picnic — whether it’s a sunrise breakfast or a sunset wine and cheese spread. With the ocean as your backdrop and no crowds in sight, it’s the ideal place to relax, reconnect and savor the beauty of the coast. When you book with me, I’ll share personalized directions to this hidden gem for an intimate and unforgettable experience.
Bald Head Island: A secluded island escape for two: Catch the ferry at Deep Point Marina in Southport, NC. Take a 30-minute ride to Bald Head Island, a semi-private paradise where cars aren’t allowed, making it a peaceful retreat for couples. Explore by bicycle, golf cart or e-bike, soak in the nearly private beaches. Go conch shell hunting with your partner — I’ve found a few myself, but my husband found me four in one day! Stop by Jailhouse Provisions for amazing cocktails and a relaxed vibe. End your day at Jules' Salty Grub & Island Pub for top-notch margaritas and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Greenfield Park: A Romantic Nature Retreat: This scenic escape in Wilmington is perfect for couples who love nature and adventure. Stroll or bike under towering trees draped in Spanish moss. Rent a paddle boat and cruise around the lake, or rent a kayak for a peaceful float. Keep an eye out for turtles and even alligators that call the lake home! Whether you’re exploring by the water or unwinding on a quiet bench, Greenfield Park is a dreamy spot for a romantic, laid-back day.
Axes & Allies: A Playful Date Night with a Twist: After your day enjoying the nature at Greenfield Park, hop across the street to "Axes & Allies". For couples looking for something a little different, Axes & Allies offers a fun, flirty and slightly competitive date night. This axe-throwing venue isn’t just about the sport — it’s about the experience. The welcoming staff makes it easy to learn, so whether you’re a first-timer or a pro, you’ll have a blast together. Challenge each other, cheer each other on and enjoy an evening of laughter and excitement in a setting that’s both relaxed and energetic.
Carolina Beach: Sun, sand and seaside strolls: The perfect mix of relaxation and fun. Carolina Beach is ideal for long walks by the ocean, soaking up the sun and enjoying a laid-back atmosphere. It’s pet-friendly year-round, so bring your fur babies along for a sunrise or sunset stroll. After a day on the sand, stop by The Lazy Pirate Sports Grill. This is my favorite spot for great food, a fun outdoor bar and a lively atmosphere. It’s perfect for unwinding together and creating memories.
Wilmington Riverfront: Strolling through charm and history: Few places in Wilmington are as romantic as the Riverfront. You can wander hand-in-hand along cobblestone streets lined with charming boutiques and waterfront views. Take your time browsing unique finds. Papercut Books is a must for cozy book lovers. Krazy Mike’s is a fun spot for quirky gifts, and The Black Cat Shoppe offers playful souvenirs to remind you of your trip. The Riverfront’s lively yet relaxed atmosphere makes it perfect for a slow afternoon of exploring, people-watching and soaking in the coastal charm before heading off to a romantic dinner (Floriana is our favorite. Read more about Floriana in the section below).
The Cotton Exchange: A romantic stroll through Wilmington’s past: Step into Wilmington’s history with a visit to The Cotton Exchange. This is where cobblestone paths and charming courtyards create an enchanting setting for couples to explore. This beautifully restored historic building is filled with unique boutiques and specialty shops, making it the perfect place to find a meaningful keepsake from your trip. Whether you're hunting for a thoughtful gift or simply enjoying the old-world charm, The Cotton Exchange is a romantic and nostalgic stop worth visiting.
Airlie Gardens: A Fairytale Stroll: A fairytale-like escape, Airlie Gardens is perfect for couples who love nature and romance. Walk under Spanish moss-draped trees, visit the peaceful pond where friendly turtles will often swim right up to you. Stop by the Butterfly House for an enchanting experience surrounded by delicate, fluttering butterflies. With stunning scenery and quiet, intimate spots throughout, it’s the perfect place for a romantic afternoon.
The Museum of Bizarre: If you and your partner love the strange and unusual, The Museum of Bizarre is a must-visit for a fun, quirky date. This offbeat museum is filled with oddities, paranormal artifacts and interactive exhibits that make for an unforgettable experience. From shrunken heads to ghost-hunting tools, there’s something weird and wonderful around every corner, making it a great place to explore, laugh and bond over the unexpected. It reminds me of a play on "Ripleys Believe it or Not".
Places to eat & drink in North Carolina

Breakfast & brunch
Sweet and Savory Cafe: Start your morning with a mix of romance and fun at Sweet and Savory Cafe. Split their incredible mimosa flight to set the perfect tone for a dreamy breakfast date. The cozy atmosphere and indulgent brunch menu make chatting over a meal feel effortless. This beloved spot gets busy — reservations on the weekends are highly recommended to ensure a relaxed, intimate start to your day.
If you end up at Sweet and Savory Cafe without a reservation and they happen to have a long wait, run across the street to Watermans Brewing.
East Oceanfront Dining: For a brunch that feels like a scene from a romance novel, East Oceanfront Dining at the Blockade Runner Hotel offers a tranquil, beachside escape. Enjoy a fresh shrimp cocktail and a delicious meal on the patio, just steps from the sand. The peaceful ambiance and occasional live string quartet create an unforgettable experience. Keep in mind that their parking lot is reserved for hotel guests. You’ll need to park on the street across from the building. Parking is inexpensive and can even be free during the quieter seasons. It’s the perfect setting to savor a slow morning together and soak in the beauty of Wrightsville Beach.
Brunches at Randall: Location is key here. There are a few Brunches around Wilmington, but the one at Randall is the best. Their vibe is cozy, charming and effortlessly romantic. Brunches at Randall is the perfect spot for couples looking to enjoy a relaxed and delicious brunch. The inviting atmosphere and friendly staff make it easy to unwind over a delightful meal, whether you're indulging in classic breakfast favorites or something a little more unique. It’s an ideal place to sip coffee or a cocktail, share bites and simply enjoy each other’s company.
Lunch & dinner
Floriana: For a truly romantic dining experience, Floriana is one of Wilmington’s most enchanting restaurants, located right on the riverfront. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, reserve an intimate patio table for two. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a delicious meal while overlooking the water. If patio seating isn’t available, cozy up at the downstairs bar, where the service is more attentive. The menu is filled with incredible dishes, and I highly recommend the duck breast, lamb gnocchi and Tortelloni Mignon. Skip the lasagna and black gnocchi, as they don’t quite live up to the rest of the menu. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just indulging in a romantic evening, Floriana is the perfect setting for a memorable night.
Beer Barrio: If you and your partner love a lively yet flavorful dining experience, Beer Barrio is a fantastic choice. Their incredible burritos, packed with bold and satisfying flavors, pair perfectly with their ample margarita options, making for a fun and casual date. Whether you’re cozied up inside or enjoying the lively downtown atmosphere from their outdoor seating, this spot brings a relaxed, inviting energy that makes sharing a meal here even more enjoyable. This spot does understandably get pretty packed during the weekend, so if you prefer a bit more personal space, I suggest going during their slow days/hours.
I Heart NY Pizza: Perfect for a spontaneous late-night bite, I Heart NY Pizza serves up authentic New York-style slices that are thin, crispy and absolutely delicious. Whether you’re ending a romantic evening out or just need a quick, satisfying meal between exploring bars and boutiques downtown, this spot delivers. While there’s no indoor seating, a few outdoor tables offer the perfect place to share a slice and people-watch together. With its easygoing, grab-and-go vibe, it’s a great stop for couples looking for a flavorful bite.
Slice of Life: For couples who love pizza and a relaxed atmosphere, Slice of Life is a must-visit. They have a denser crust than "I Heart NY Pizza". Their bold flavors set them apart from other spots in town, and with plenty of seating, it’s an easy choice for a laid-back meal together. Whether you’re splitting a whole pie or just grabbing a couple of slices, this spot has the perfect blend of great food and casual charm for an effortless, cozy date night.
Tower Seven Baja Mexican Grill: For a fun and flavorful date night with a coastal vibe, Tower Seven Baja Mexican Grill is a great spot to indulge in fresh, delicious Mexican food. Their creamy, irresistible queso is the perfect way to start your meal, and their vibrant flavors make every bite satisfying. However, be aware that the servers and bartenders here are notorious for being flirty with men no matter the age or situation. If you’re not a fan of watching your partner get hit on in front of you, you may want to skip this one.
Drinks
Barbary Coast: For a laid-back, no-frills evening, Barbary Coast offers a grungy dive bar experience that’s perfect for couples who enjoy a bit of chaos and character. Dark, a little rough around the edges and full of personality, it’s the ideal place to unwind with your partner over a game of pool or shuffleboard. The energy here is raw but fun, making it the perfect spot for couples who love to let loose. If you’re lucky enough to have Nick or Ryan behind the bar, let them know Mandy sent you — they’ll make sure you’re taken care of.
The Ivy: Just a short stroll from Barbary Coast, The Ivy offers a cozy, intimate setting that’s perfect for couples looking for a quiet, laid-back drink. Small, cool and effortlessly charming, this spot is ideal for unwinding and enjoying each other’s company away from the bustle of the other bars. If Bob is working, be sure to let him know Mandy sent you — he’ll make you feel right at home.
Blue Post Billiards: If you’re looking for a spot with a bit of quirky charm, Blue Post Billiards is a must-visit. Tucked right across the alley from The Ivy, it boasts darts, pool, arcade games and a charming patio that once was an alleyway. The vibe is casual and fun, with a bit of unpredictable flair — bartenders can either be super friendly or a bit on the sassy side, which only adds to the experience. However, if you are sensitive to poor customer service, it may be best not to take your chances here.
Lulas: Hidden away just a few blocks from Barbary, Lulas offers a lively, underground vibe. With foosball, Pac-Man and a speakeasy atmosphere, it’s a fun and energetic place to enjoy a drink and some playful competition. While it can get crowded on weekends, it’s totally worth it for the atmosphere and the chance to share a fun night out together. Plus, it’s where we first met Bob from The Ivy — so you know it has a special place in our hearts!
WTF (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot) [Honorable Mention]: If you’re in the mood for a cocktail experience that’s a bit more refined, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is an absolute gem. The cocktails here are top-notch, especially if you love Old-Fashions — this place is heaven for whiskey lovers. But even if you’re not into strong flavors, their mixologists know how to craft perfect drinks tailored to your taste. My personal favorite is "Berry Me in Tequila". It’s a bit of a walk from the other bars, but the drinks alone make it well worth it. Just a heads-up — after 8 pm on weekends, it gets packed, so be prepared for a lively crowd!
