Things to do in Lagos, Nigeria
Lagos, Nigeria offers a plethora of luxurious experiences for discerning travelers and budget-friendly activities for savvy travelers as well. Here are some of my recommendations:
Dine at Shiro Restaurant & Bar: Known for its exquisite Asian fusion cuisine and elegant ambiance, Shiro is a must-visit for food enthusiasts.
Relax at Lekki Leisure Lake: Enjoy a serene escape with activities like jet skiing, quad biking and lounging by the water.
Explore Nike Art Gallery: This gallery showcases an impressive collection of Nigerian art and offers a unique cultural experience. Also, the art is for sale so pack light.
Shop at The Palms Shopping Mall: Indulge in some retail therapy at this upscale mall featuring international brands and luxury boutiques.
Visit Tarkwa Bay Beach: Accessible by boat, this beach offers a tranquil setting for sunbathing, swimming and enjoying the beautiful coastline.
Tour Badagary: This one is outside of the bustling city of Lagos but totally worth the experience, so make it a day trip. Come learn about the history of the Brazilian Barracoon and the tragic history of slavery. An eye-opening educational tour.
Shop at Balogun Market: Experience the hustle and bustle of one of Lagos’ largest markets. You can find everything from textiles to souvenirs at bargain prices but bring your negotiation skills.
Enjoy street food: Savor local delicacies like suya (spicy grilled meat) and puff-puff (fried dough balls) from street vendors. It’s a delicious and inexpensive way to taste Lagos.
Visit the New Afrika Shrine: Enjoy live music and cultural performances at this iconic venue dedicated to the legendary musician Fela Kuti.
Day trips:
Brazilian Barracoon Tour - Badagary
This is an all-day trip and tour. You will need to either travel to Badagary by boat or take a two-hour drive. The choice is yours and can be arranged. No wahala (problem). Once you arrive, you will be greeted by your guide and my favorite is Anago James. He will show you a few landmarks and then you will enter the Barracoon where you will learn all about the Brazilian slave trade. It is sure to touch your heart and soul. After that, you’ll have the option to walk the path of the point of no return. This is a long journey and I suggest you wear your most comfortable shoes and a hat. Be careful of the ocean; it is breathtaking but the waves are big. My advice is not to go into the ocean unless you’re a professional. I don’t want to give away too much of the tour, since it’s something you should experience for yourself. Please reach out if such a tour peaks your interest.
Places to eat & drink in Lagos, Nigeria
If you’re craving spicy you’ve come to the right place. Can’t take the heat? That’s ok; Lagos is still for you.
Samantha’s Bistro: Are you craving breakfast all day? How about a vegan-friendly restaurant? Samantha’s got you covered.
Piano Bistro & Restaurant: An elegant experience that is sure to be pleasing to several senses. Try their breakfast tower.
Mint By Eat Green Company: Delicious and nutritious eats in Lekki. I recommend them for health-conscious travelers who don’t want to miss out on flavor.
Black Pepper Steakhouse: They offer a variety of steaks, seafood and local favorites like Jollof rice. Extensive cocktails and more.
Huahan Korean Restaurant: Yes, Korean BBQ in Lagos! Definitely worth trying out with a bottle of soju. Located inside the Lagos Oriental hotel.
Wakame Lagos: Asian cuisine inside of a Marriott hotel. I absolutely loved their spicy chicken ramen. The drinks were amazing and refreshing.
788 on the Sea: Fine dining establishment in Lagos. Known for the best drinks. You’ll get amazing service.
Avant Gard by Soul Chow: An eclectic restaurant with world influences. From local delicacies to pizza, they’re sure to please.
A trip to Lagos wouldn’t be complete without a taste of spicy, and savory suya right on the streets. There’s so many aboki to choose from — that means "friend" in Hausa!
