Things to do in Thailand

If there is such a thing as a perfect time to visit Thailand, Thai New Year, also known as Songkran Festival, must be the one. This traditional celebration, which marks the beginning of the Buddhist lunar calendar's New Year, is famous for its water festival where people celebrate by splashing water for blessing and good luck. It's a vibrant and lively festival that attracts both locals and tourists from around the world.

Duration: The Songkran Festival traditionally lasts for three days, starting on April 13th and ending on April 15th. However, in 2024, the festival will be celebrated for the entire month of April as Thailand promotes its tourism under the theme ‘World Water Festival – The Songkran Phenomenon’.

Cultural Significance: Songkran is not just about water fights; it's a time of reflection, gratitude, and renewal. It's a time when people pay respect to their elders and make merit by visiting temples, offering food to monks, and pouring water on Buddha images. It's a moment of bonding with family and friends, celebrating together, and starting the New Year on a positive note.

UNESCO Recognition: In 2023, UNESCO recognized ‘Songkran in Thailand, traditional Thai New Year festival’ as a mankind’s intangible cultural heritage. This acknowledgment highlights the significance of the festival in Thai culture and its importance as a symbol of community, respect for elders, and traditional values.

Top Destinations for Songkran Festivities:

  • Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai is renowned for having one of the most exuberant Songkran celebrations. The city's Old Town becomes the center of festivities, with locals and tourists alike joining in the water fights along the streets. One of the main highlights is the parade of Buddha statues, where people sprinkle water to cleanse and bring good luck for the year ahead. It's a fantastic cultural experience combined with the joyful atmosphere of the water festival.

  • Phuket: Phuket hosts one of the most exciting Songkran celebrations in southern Thailand. The festival here is known for its water parties, live music, and cultural performances. Patong Beach is the epicenter of the celebrations, where the streets turn into a water arena, and everyone, regardless of age, joins in the fun.

  • Bangkok: The capital city also offers a unique Songkran experience. Here, you can visit temples to witness traditional ceremonies or join in the water splashing festivities along the famous Khao San Road. Additionally, many malls and shopping centers organize water-themed events, making it a fun and family-friendly destination.

  • Pattaya: Pattaya is known for its lively nightlife, and during Songkran, it becomes even more vibrant. The beach road and walking street turn into water battlegrounds where locals and tourists come together to celebrate. The atmosphere is electric, and you'll find people dancing, singing and enjoying the festivities.
