Curator’s statement
I grew up and lived in San Diego for 24 years before moving, and I have to say that the weather was always nice with blue skies. Summertime is always the best time to hit the beaches, when you can walk along the shore and see sandcastles. Not only are the beaches popular, but there are also many other spots in the city worth going to, including museums, the zoo and lots of good restaurants!

Things to do in San Diego

Mission Beach: Here, you can walk along the boardwalk, where there are tons of shops you can check out! There is also an amusement park here called Belmont Park, where you can enjoy some rides in the summer sun with the opportunity to still walk along the shore.
SeaWorld: For those with little ones, SeaWorld is right around the corner from Mission Beach. You and your family can enjoy shows, the aquarium, and rides for all ages!
Ocean Beach: If you like a good trail, Sunset Cliffs is a popular one where you can have an amazing view of the waves crashing into the cliffs. This is a perfect spot for a photo op! North from there, you can check out the tidepools and walk up onto the pier.
Coronado Island: There is a lot to offer here. Not only is there another beach — Coronado Beach, which has firepits! — but you can also stop by to get a great viewpoint at Centennial Park to see the San Diego skyline and the Coronado Bridge (a great drive — look on either side for a nice view) while also enjoying the light, salty yet fresh air from the little beach.
Balboa Park: This is not just any normal park, but a great place to visit some museums in buildings that are architecturally designed with intricate carvings. Walking around here, you will find a huge and beautiful water fountain that lights up at night, an open-air theater to catch a showing and shops, which there can be a lot more if there is an event going on!
San Diego Zoo: Right next to Balboa Park is the San Diego Zoo, where you can visit and learn about some of the animals or go on a tour.
Old Town: If you like learning the history of a destination, this is a great spot to learn about the state's birthplace. There are shops, restaurants and a few museums. My personal favorite is the hacienda called La Casa de Estudillo.
USS Midway Museum: This is an experience for the whole family! You have a chance to board an aircraft carrier that you can explore almost every inch of. There are different tours to choose from, making for a very engaging experience.
Places to eat & drink in San Diego

Breakfast & brunch
Hash House A-Go-Go: The plates here are HUGE and different than anything else! This is a must-go-to spot if you are visiting. They do tend to get busy, so I suggest making a reservation.
Talavera Azul: One of my favorite authentic Mexican restaurants! The food is delicious and the coffee is good. They serve two kinds — regular and what is called La Olla, which makes your coffee a bit sweeter. Give it a try! It's a different kind of sweet.
Lunch & dinner
Hodads: There are two locations, one in Ocean Beach and the other downtown. I personally like the one in Ocean Beach since it's a great opportunity to head down to the beach right after. The burgers and shakes here are AMAZING and a local favorite.
Cafe Coyote: Another authentic Mexican restaurant favorite, located in Old Town. The tortillas are made fresh and from scratch. With many flavors to choose from, their margaritas are so delicious and great for a summer's day.
Filippis' Pizza Grotto: If you are craving some fresh-made pizza that is not only cheesy but also has great-tasting toppings, this is the right place to go. One of my personal favorites for some good pizza that has a tasty red sauce and just the right amount of cheese.
The Galley: For some entertainment and to enjoy the view of the marina while eating some seafood, here is where you can get both. They offer happy hour, live music and dancing. Check out their site to plan when to go to catch some bands playing here.
Drinks
Voltaire Beach House: This is an outdoor restaurant with a bar that has seating with a fire pit in the middle. This is located in Ocean Beach and is walking distance to the beach.
