Curator’s statement

The mornings on Lake Como still take my breath away — the stillness of the water, the mountains turning pink at sunrise. During my summers there, I fell in love with the little moments: sipping espresso at the tiny bar in Menaggio where the locals head for their cornetto, finding that perfect swimming spot past the villa gardens for a morning dip.

The best part is wandering the cobblestone alleys in the evening when the day-trippers have left and you can hear music drifting from family dinners through open windows. This place gets under your skin — it's not just about the stunning views; it's about the rhythm of life here.

Menaggio

Water activities:

  • Victoria Beach Club: Lake Como's newest luxury beach destination with multiple pools, upscale restaurant and stylish daybeds. Book in advance, especially for weekends. The sunset aperitivo scene here is becoming legendary.

Historic walks & views:

  • Chiesa di San Martino: A rewarding uphill hike leading to a 16th-century church with spectacular lake views. Go early morning when it's cooler, the hike starts in Griante which is approximately 1.5km away from Menaggios center.

  • Old Town walks: The historic center's narrow cobblestone streets reveal medieval remnants and lovely squares. Don't miss Via Calvi's shops and the charming Piazza Garibaldi.

Varenna

Must-visit gardens:

  • Villa Monastero: Arrive at opening (9:30 am) to enjoy the botanical gardens at their most peaceful. The lakeside promenade through the gardens offers countless photo opportunities. The villa's interior provides fascinating insights into Lake Como's aristocratic past.

Active adventures:

  • Castello di Vezio: A moderate 45-minute hike up to a 13th-century castle. Time your visit for the falconry displays (check schedule at tourist office). The castle terrace offers the best panoramic views of the lake's three branches.

Romantic spots:

  • La Passeggiata dell'Amore (Lover's Walk): This lakeside promenade, built into the rock face, is especially magical at sunset. Start from the ferry dock and follow it to the old fishing harbor.

Bellagio

Gardens & villas:

  • Villa Melzi: The gardens are stunning year-round but exceptional in spring when azaleas bloom. Visit early morning to enjoy the tranquil Japanese garden and neoclassical sculptures without crowds.

Beach & swimming:

  • Lido di Bellagio: A perfect mix of beach club and public space with a pool, sandy beach area and casual restaurant. Great for families and more relaxed than fancier beach clubs.

Shopping & artisans:

  • The Salita Serbelloni: These steep stone steps are lined with artisan shops selling local silk, leather and crafts. Most interesting in the morning hours when artisans are often working in their shops.
