Day 1: Exploring Pisa's center

Morning: Kickstart your day with a visit to Dolce Pisa on via Santa Maria for a gourmet Tuscan breakfast—a cappuccino with Torta coi Bischeri. After a taste of traditional pastries in this authentic cafeteria, continue on historical via Santa Maria on foot towards the iconic Campo dei Miracoli.

Campo dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles): Arrive at the stunning Campo dei Miracoli, home to awe-inspiring landmarks like the Camposanto, Baptister, Cathedral, and of course, the Leaning Tower. With pre-booked tickets, you'll glide through the entrances smoothly, allowing ample time to marvel at these architectural wonders.

Lunch: For an authentic taste of Tuscany, make your way on foot to I Porci Comodi in Piazza Evangelista Torricelli. Indulge in lampredotto, a local specialty prepared from the cow's fourth stomach, or opt for the lampredotto sandwich — an exquisite blend of flavors representing the region's culinary heritage. The vibrant square filled with university students adds a lively backdrop to your lunch experience.

Afternoon Exploration: Following lunch, energize with an espresso like a true Italian at Havana Lounge Café, nestled within the same square. Then, wander towards the fascinating Piazza dei Cavalieri, taking in the history and stories surrounding the renowned Scuola Normale and the clock tower, Palazzo dell’Orologio. Relish in the historical significance and architectural splendor of this area.

City Walls & Evening Treats: Return to Campo dei Miracoli to embark on a tour of the remarkably preserved medieval city walls. Purchase your tickets online and relish the opportunity to explore the main city landmarks before the site's closing time. As the day winds down, treat yourself to artisanal gelato from Gelateria dei Coltelli on the Lungarno or Rufus in Piazza Santa Caterina, known for their seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. You will find many options for delicious vegan flavors too!

Cuisine Delights: Partake in the Italian ritual of aperitif at Piazza della Pera and savor a glass of local wine. Keep in mind that dinner service typically starts after 7 PM. For an unforgettable dinner experience, head to Campano restaurant near Piazza delle Vettovaglie and near the historical landmark of Campano Tower. I recommend trying the tender Fiorentina di Chianina paired with a rich and rounded Bolgheri red wine, the specialties of the house.

Nighttime: Embrace the night in Piazza delle Vettovaglie and at Sud, where homemade liquors flow, or explore the vibrant cocktail bars at Piazza Chiara Gambacorti (also called Piazza della Pera). Beer enthusiasts can delight in Torre del Luppolo and Orzo Bruno, both offering an ever-changing selection of draft and bottled beers.

Day 2: Pisa and beyond

Morning Indulgence: Begin your day at Cioccorocolato on via Giovanni di Simone, treating yourself to a scrumptious breakfast spread featuring homemade pastries and artisanal chocolate drinks and cakes. Energized, set out to explore more of Pisa's cultural and natural treasures.

Cultural Exploration: Start by visiting the historic Church San Michele in Borgo, followed by a leisurely stroll along the Lungarno, visiting S. Maria della Spina, Giardino Scotto and Piagge. These sites offer a blend of architectural marvels, serene landscapes, and glimpses into Pisa's rich heritage.

Museums & Lunch: For a cultural break, dive into the exhibitions at Palazzo Blu, or San Matteo National Museum to admire ancient art and artifacts. For a quick but tasty lunch, savor the typical Cecina at A Tutta Pizza on via delle Colonne or Pizzeria da Teresa on via Oberdan, or indulge in the irresistible panzerotti fritti at Pizzeria da Mario Sua Maestà Il Panzerotto in Piazza delle Vettovaglie.

Beyond Pisa: For those with a car, consider venturing beyond the city center. L'Arte Del Bere in San Giuliano Terme offers refined wine tastings, while Auser Liquorificio Artigianale in Avane presents premium homemade liquors and grappa. Additionally, Bagni di Pisa in San Giuliano Terme beckons with its luxurious thermal retreat, perfect for a spa and wellness experience in a historical palace.

Dinner Choices: As the day transitions into the evening, relish a dinner at Parco Migliarino San Rossore, Ristorante il Poldino. Their weekly changing menu values seasonality and locally sourced ingredients. Here you will find a selection of typical Tuscan venison specialties, such as wild boar pappardelle and rabbit stew. The restaurant has an excellent local wine selection and is committed to sustainability in choosing organic, seasonal and local ingredients supplied by nearby producers.

Day 3: San Rossore Park and Marina di Pisa

Docked boats on a river and brown buildings in the surrounding.

Morning Exploration: Commence the day at Pasticceria Siciliana on via Garibaldi, indulging in the best cannoli and pistachio croissants in town. Take a short drive to the ancient Basilica of San Piero a Grado, a historical marvel dating back to the 10th-12th centuries, nestled just outside Pisa.

Nature Tours: For a nature-filled morning, opt for a hike from Basilica of San Piero a Grado to Marina di Pisa through the Migliarino and San Rossore Park following the Gabriele D’Annunzio path. Alternatively, head directly to San Rossore Park by car to visit the stunning wild area with guided tours available on foot, horseback, by bike, or even by boat.

Beachside Lunch & Afternoon: Drive to Restaurant la Cambusa in Marina di Pisa for a lunch featuring homemade pasta and locally sourced seafood. Post-lunch, enjoy a relaxing stroll along the beautiful Lungomare, possibly taking a dip in the beach at Marina di Pisa or nearby Viareggio.

Evening Finale: Conclude your culinary journey at Spaghetteria Alle Bandierine on via Mercanti for an intimate dinner experience. Their signature dishes are their fresh homemade spaghetti with meat or fish (they also offer vegetarian and vegan options). However, if you are in good company, I encourage you to share starters and main courses. Start your meal by sharing platters of salumi, featuring exquisite ham and salami, or opt for enticing fish-based starters that pave the way for a delightful culinary journey. As mains, indulge in their tender and juicy tagliata, featuring perfectly cooked meat, or the tender and flavorful grilled octopus, maybe the best I’ve ever had.
