Curator’s statement

Nestled on the southern end of the Gold Coast, Byron Bay is more than just a beach town — it's a lifestyle. Over the past decade, this boho haven has become a magnet for digital nomads, influencers, surfers and even celebrity expats seeking sun-kissed shores and laid-back vibes. For beginners itching to ride the waves, Byron Bay boasts some of the best surfing conditions around. With gentle rolling waves and sandy bottom bays, it's the perfect place to catch your first break. Plus, with top-notch instructors calling this place home, you'll be hanging ten in no time. But Byron Bay isn't just about surfing — it's a burgeoning hotspot for nightlife and foodies alike. A wave of younger crowds has brought a bloom of trendy eateries and hip hangouts to the scene. Yet, amidst the hustle, the town's true treasure lies in its untouched natural beauty and serene beaches — a haven for aspiring surfers and wellness enthusiasts alike.

Day 1: Arrival and Immersion

A row of four cocktails in different colors with black straws placed on a wall with a garden behind

Afternoon:

Arrive at Gold Coast Airport (OOL), just a short 45-minute drive North from Byron Bay.
Note: There is also Ballina Byron, a smaller regional airport 35mins outside the center of Byron, with 68 direct fight per week from most major cities in Australia. I advise using Google Flights to compare best/most affordable routes for your trip.

Grab rental Car & Check into your chosen accommodation:

For Vibrant Energy: Beach Hotel Byron Bay. Experience the heartbeat of Byron, with live music and events right on your doorstep. Located directly across the street from Main Beach.

For Tranquil Retreat: Bask & Stow. Stay a few blocks off the main drag for peaceful surroundings and surf chic design just moments away from the coastal nature trail.

Sunset:

Enjoy an early dinner at Miss Margarita, a colorful two-story Mexican cantina known for fresh food and killer cocktails. Don't miss out on their signature Tommy (skinny) margarita and Illegal Tommy (mezcal) margarita.
Post dinner, take an easy stroll along Jonson Street and explore the eclectic mix of shops, bars and eateries, soaking in Byron's boho-hip atmosphere.

Head to bed or option to keep the party going- Grabbing a drink at The Northern Hotel, where dueling pianos set the stage for a very lively evening.

Day 2: Coastal Exploration and Indulgence

A beautiful view of the Byron Bay coastline with green mountains and a rocky coastline taken at sunset

Morning:

Start your day on the coastal track leading from Main Beach up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse, enjoying the early morning serenity and pastel colors of Clarks Beach, The Pass, and Wategos beaches as you make your uphill climb to the most Easterly point of Australia for the sunrise emerging over the horizon and ending this out-and-back track at the Cape Byron Lighthouse & Lookout. The decent back down is just a gorgeous with views over all of Byron Bay.

Enjoy a healthy breakfast on the patio of The Pass Café. A lush hidden gem a few steps from the beach. Must try local favorite: Turmeric Anti-inflammatory Smoothie. I’m a smoothie enthusiast and I’m not alone in saying this is probably one of the best smoothies I’ve ever had! Paired with poached eggs & avocado on sourdough for a well-earned win!

Post breakie, finish your walk with toes in the sand hugging the sandy coastline from The Pass point all the back to Main Beach.

Need another coffee? (Aussies are well-known for their coffee culture) check out the takeaway counter of Fishheads at Byron Bay before returning to your hotel to get ready for the day.

Midday:

Spend the mid-morning exploring Byron's many boutique designer shops when the open around 10am to avoid the heat and crowds.

My fav boutiques to pop-in:

  • Kavala Collective: Only flagship location for the popular tropical-inspired active wear brand.

  • Spell & the Gypsey: Flowly bohemian printed fashion pieces epitomizing Bryon’s luxe hippie style.

  • Industrie: Stylish Aussie menswear brand.

  • Abysse: Only flagship location for the sustainable swimwear & wetsuit brand covered by ocean-loving island girls.

Replenish with lunch at Ginn Jinn Café & Restaurant, indulging in seasonal local cuisine and crisp Aussie wine before heading back to one of the many beaches to soak in some vitamin sea.

Afternoon:

Treat yourself to happy hour at Loft Byron Bay, where $2.50 oysters and drink specials await from 4-6 p.m.

Continue the culinary journey with dinner at The Mez Club, a swanky Moroccan-styled open-air restaurant serving Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.

Day 3: Wellness and Surfing Adventure

Morning:

Start your day with a rejuvenating yoga or trendy reformer Pilates session at Bende Byron located in the nearby Habitat, new a dine, shop, live, work complex.
Enjoy a healthy plant-based breakfast and bullet-proof coffee at Vagabond Byron Bay, fueling up for an active day ahead.

Midday:

Embark on a private surf lesson with Kirsty Delport at Soul Surf School, tapping into Byron's renowned surf culture and learning from one of the best instructors in the area. Kirsty, a pro surfer originally from South-Africa also hosts immersive surf retreats!

Afternoon:

Conclude your weekend with a leisurely lunch at Beach Byron Bay, savoring coastal flavors and basking in the panoramic ocean views. My personal favorite dishes: their organic sourdough with smoked butter (Aussies LOVE sourdough bread), kinkawooka black mussels, local snapper sushimi and finishing with the mushroom tagliolini pasta. Bonus- their executive chef is from Hawaii!

Departure:

Bid farewell to Byron Bay, feeling rejuvenated and fulfilled after a weekend of wellness, adventure and proper indulgence. Head back to the airport, reminiscing on the unforgettable experiences of your stay in this vibrant coastal town.
