Canal Saint-Martin, a picturesque waterway in Paris.
Curator’s statement

The neighborhood around Canal Saint-Martin in the 10th arrondissement is one of my favorites in Paris. There are always new restaurants and cafes to try and the atmosphere is dynamic and lively. The canal itself is a centerpiece of sunny Parisian afternoons - perfect for a leisurely picnic with some of your favorite French goodies. Whether you stay in this area or simply make time to spend an afternoon there, you won’t regret it!

Things to do in Canal Saint-Martin, Paris

Activities and museums

  • Picnic on the Canal - Picnicking along the Canal is a quintessential way to spend a sunny afternoon in Paris! Pick up a baguette or an artisan loaf from a nearby boulangerie (a portion of pain des amis from Du Pain et des Idees is a favorite), a cheese or two from a market or fromagerie (a soft spreadable chevre and a comte or Beaufort perhaps?), and a bottle of wine from a local caviste - and you’re all set! Nearby Julhes has both gourmet snacks and an excellent bottle selection.

  • Boat trip on the Canal - Book a boat tour that will take you the length of the canal (plus some circle out into the Seine) for a unique perspective on the neighborhoods lining the canal. Plus, you’ll get to experience the series of locks that raise and lower the boat and the underground vault where the canal passes under the Bastille.

  • Musee de l’Eventail - For a museum experience off the beaten track, visit the museum of fans and fan restoration. It’s a smaller museum with a workshop feel that offers a charming look at the intricate artistry of these delicate objects.

  • Maison Alaena - Need a vacation from your vacation, or just a chance to refresh and restore after a busy itinerary of sightseeing? Maison Alaena is a peaceful, soothing refuge offering spa treatments, yoga classes and wellness consultations. Book ahead.

Shopping

  • Landline - Landline is an extremely well-curated shop with a general store feel, offering something for everyone. The owner champions eco-conscious living, and the shop boasts a meticulously chosen selection from French and European artisans.

  • Thanx God I’m a VIP - Did you come to Paris for vintage shopping? Thanx God I'm a VIP offers a meticulously edited and highly organized selection of high-end vintage clothing and accessories. Think Chanel jackets, Hermes scarves and designer finds.

Places to eat & drink in Canal Saint-Martin, Paris

An aerial view of two coffees and a pastry on a yellow and red table at Ten Belles.
  • Ten Belles - Excellent house-roasted coffee and accompanying treats, particularly well known for their sourdough bread. Favorites include their sandwiches at lunch and their cinnamon rolls (roule cannelle).

  • Sain Boulangerie - A bakery that focuses on locally sourced and ancient grains with fantastic pastries (try the chausson, or turnover, made with seasonal fruit) and creative loaves.

  • Nour Comptoir - For a quick bite at lunch or in the evening, grab an araye - a Middle-Eastern stuffed pita sandwich, or a laffa wrap. Their grilled cauliflower with tahini is a particularly fantastic side.

  • BMK Paris Bamako - Incredible West African cuisine in a warm, inviting space. Share fried plantains, mafe and yassa - with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options! Reserve ahead for dinner. There’s another location in the 11th arrondissement.

  • Bouillon Republique - Classic Parisian dishes in a traditional setting. Enjoy a vibrant atmosphere with efficient service - this is not a spot for a long leisurely meal, but a great chance to enjoy consistently well-made typical Parisian cuisine. A good option for groups and families.

  • Abricot - A playful and welcoming cocktail bar with a focus on creative drinks and plant-based snacks. Inviting vibes and of course, delicious cocktails! Perfect for an apero or a late night drink.
