Curator’s statement

Whether I am looking for a special gift or looking to socialize, Istanbul's Şişli district is one of my go-to areas in Istanbul. In these areas chic flagship stores brush shoulders with innovative ateliers, making it the perfect area for label lovers and trendsetters alike. But the allure reaches beyond retail therapy. In charming courtyards you will find cozy cafes, while on the rooftops you will find lively bars. Nisantasi, Teşvikiye and Maçka are not only neighborhoods for discerning shoppers in Istanbul; they are a group of lively modern neighborhoods with a rich history to be discovered.

Things to do in Turkey

An aerial view of the city during the daytime.
  1. Attend a performance at the prestigious Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall.

  2. Visit one of the art galleries, such as Maçka Art Gallery: where various exhibitions are hosted during the year.

  3. Visit Harbiye Military Museum and Cultural Site Command, which houses over 1,000 years of Turkish military history.

  4. Grab some popcorn and enjoy a movie at the Grand Pera: A historic movie theater ideal for catching foreign films or independent releases.

  5. Explore the Tesvikiye Mosque in Nişantaşı. It is a neo-baroque structure with a small garden where you can take a moment to relax during your tour of the city.

  6. Walk down Abdi İpekçi Caddesi and enjoy world-class luxury shopping at the designer boutiques such as Dior, Chanel and Louis Vuitton.

  7. Escape the city with stroll in Maçka Park. Here you will find walking and jogging paths, a playground and a dog park.

  8. Take a stroll or catch a boat ride along the Bosphorus, the strait that separates Europe and Asia. The sunset views are absolutely stunning.

Places to eat & drink in Turkey

  1. Experience the Turkish cafe culture on Abdi İpekçi Street. With so many options it will be hard to choose your favorite, but I recommend Kapicciiiinoo if you are looking for both a cozy and luxurious experience.

  2. Step back in time when you walk into this 1930s inspired coffee and pastry shop with a visit to Petra Topağacı.

  3. Kalimera: My personal favorite restaurant in this area is the brand-new Greek restaurant located inside the Park Hyatt Maçka Palas. They took authenticity to a new level by flying in a Greek chef and staff. You can choose fresh fish from the display and have it cooked however you like.

  4. Nicole: A Michelin-starred restaurant offering an elegant fine dining experience. Seasonal ingredients are featured on the menu including innovative dishes like pigeon terrine with foie gras and cherry compote and sea bass with artichoke purée and black truffle sauce.

  5. Nicole Kitchen: This casual sister restaurant to the Michelin-starred Nicole offers a more relaxed dining experience. The menu features pizzas, pastas, salads, and sandwiches.

  6. Hünkar Lokanta: A classic Turkish restaurant open since 1950 that includes vegan options. The menu features dishes like hünkar beğendi (braised lamb shank on eggplant purée), yaprak sarma (stuffed grape leaves) and künefe (shredded phyllo dough pastry filled with cheese and drizzled with syrup).

  7. Nusr-Et: This internationally acclaimed steakhouse is also located in the Park Hyatt and is a popular spot for celebrities and foodies alike. The menu features dry-aged steaks, as well as other Turkish and international dishes.

  8. Çatçat Nişantaşı: A restaurant serving Anatolian cuisine with a modern twist. The menu features dishes like lamb shank with smoked eggplant purée, grilled octopus with fava beans and roasted pumpkin ravioli with sage butter.
