Advisor - Mackinac Island: A Timeless Escape – A Guide to Michigan’s Hidden Gem
Curator’s statement

Mackinac Island is a place like no other — a car-free paradise where history, nature and charm blend seamlessly. Having visited the island as a child and then again some 20 years later, I was amazed at how little had changed. The quaint streets, the scent of fudge in the air and the peaceful clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages were exactly as I remembered. Mackinac Island feels like stepping into a storybook, where time slows down, and every visit is filled with nostalgia and discovery.

Things to do on Mackinac Island, Michigan

  1. Explore the Original Butterfly House & Insect World: Step into a tropical paradise filled with vibrant butterflies at the Original Butterfly House. This is one of the oldest live butterfly exhibits in the country. Wander through lush gardens and see a variety of exotic species up close.

  2. Bike the Island Loop (8.2 Miles): One of the best ways to take in Mackinac Island’s beauty is by biking the scenic 8.2-mile Island Loop. The mostly flat trail follows the shoreline, offering stunning water views and peaceful forested stretches. A must-see stop along the way is Arch Rock, a breathtaking natural limestone arch that rises 146 feet above the shoreline.

  3. Horseback riding at Cindy’s Riding Stable: Experience the island like a true local with a guided or unguided horseback ride from Cindy’s Riding Stable. Whether you're an experienced rider or a beginner, this is a peaceful and unforgettable way to explore Mackinac’s scenic trails.

  4. Spend the day at the Grand Hotel: The Grand Hotel is one of Mackinac Island’s most iconic landmarks. It is known for its stunning architecture, luxurious amenities and world-famous porch — the longest in the world! Even if you’re not staying overnight, visitors can pay a small entrance fee to explore the beautiful grounds. Enjoy afternoon tea and take part in fun activities. If you're staying at the Grand Hotel:

    1. Enjoy breathtaking views from the famous front porch.

    2. Go in search of the Secret Hidden Garden!

    3. Indulge in a five-course dinner in the elegant dining room

    4. Unwind at the Esther Williams Swimming Pool.

    5. Experience evening live music and dancing.

  5. Mini Golf & Family Fun Play a round of putt-putt while enjoying beautiful lake views. Many hotels and inns also offer lawn games like croquet and bocce ball.

  6. Visit Fort Mackinac Step back in time at Fort Mackinac, a historic military outpost from the 1700s. Watch live reenactments, learn about the island’s history and enjoy incredible panoramic views from the fort’s high bluff.

  7. Go Fudge Tasting Mackinac Island is famous for its fudge, and no trip is complete without sampling the island’s best. Walk down Main Street and stop at classic shops like Murdick’s Fudge, Ryba’s Fudge and JoAnn’s Fudge.

  8. Take a Carriage Tour Since no cars are allowed on the island, a horse-drawn carriage tour is the perfect way to explore Mackinac’s highlights, from historic sites to hidden gems. You’ll get a narrated history of the island while taking in the peaceful scenery.

  9. Kayak or Paddleboard on Lake Huron Experience Mackinac Island from the water by renting a kayak or paddleboard. Paddling along the coastline gives you a different perspective of the island’s cliffs, forests and historic landmarks.

  10. Hike to Sugar Loaf A lesser-known but equally stunning natural rock formation, Sugar Loaf is a limestone stack that rises 75 feet above the forest. Hike up to this unique landmark for great photo opportunities.
