Curator’s statement

Step into the heart of the Provencal villages, where narrow cobblestone streets wind their way through markets bursting with the flavors and aromas of fresh produce, artisanal cheeses and fragrant herbs. The vibrant colors of local markets and the timeless architecture comes alive through the towns of Provence. Provence is more than a geographical location; it's a canvas painted with hues of lavender fields, olive groves and azure skies.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and its many markets

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is often called the "Venice of Provence" due to its canals and the Sorgue River that flows through the town. The water features contribute to the town's scenic and tranquil ambiance. They even have a market on the water in wooden boats. Definitely worth planning a day to see this unique market that takes you back in time. The town is also renowned for its antique markets. The Sunday market, in particular, draws visitors and collectors from near and far. You can find a wide array of antiques, including furniture, art, and vintage items.

Truffle hunting in Provence

Provence is home to various truffle-rich areas, including the Luberon and the Alpilles. You can find truffle hunting experiences in towns like Apt, Carpentras, and Richerenches, which are well-known for truffle markets. Truffle hunting involves the use of specially trained dogs. These well trained dogs can sniff out the distinct scent of truffles beneath the soil. During the truffle hunt, the trufficulteur and the truffle dog(s) will lead you through wooded areas to hunt for these culinary treasures. As the dog detects the scent of truffles, the trufficulteur will guide you in locating and digging up the truffles. After the truffle hunt, you will be rewarded with a truffle-themed culinary adventure, prepared with the freshly harvested truffles. This is a delightful opportunity to savor the unique flavor of truffles in various dishes, from cheese to ice cream topped with truffle honey.

Quarry of Light

The "Carrières de Lumières", also know as the Cathedral of Images, is a unique multimedia art exhibition not to be missed. It is held in a former limestone quarry located in Les Baux-de-Provence, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. The concept of Carrières de Lumières involves projecting immersive and dynamic multimedia shows directly onto the vast limestone surfaces of the quarry. The combination of the images, music, and sound transforms the quarry into a mesmerizing audiovisual spectacle. Each year, Carrières de Lumières features different themes and artistic works. In years past, the immersive experience displayed the works of famous artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet.

Gordes, France

Gordes is a picturesque village located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. It is renowned for its stunning hilltop setting, well-preserved architecture, and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Gordes is perched on the top of a hill in the Luberon region, providing breathtaking views of the Luberon Valley and the surrounding landscapes. The village is characterized by narrow cobblestone streets, stone buildings, and charming squares. Located near Gordes is the Senanque Abbey, a Cistercian abbey surrounded by gorgeous lavender fields. The abbey is a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture and is the perfect place to visit and take some amazing lavender field photographs. Hello Instagram!

Gordes hosts a weekly market where you can explore local produce, crafts, and regional specialties. The market is a great place to immerse yourself in the local culture and discover fresh produce, artisanal products and wonderful souveniers.

Places to eat & drink

  • La Bastide Pierres
Italian food in France? They are neighbors after all. And La Bastide Pierres is a perfect example of that. Not only is the food delicious, but the service is attentive and kind too. Open since 1820, enjoy the beautiful terrace with a view of Gordes Chateau for lunch or the cozy interior for dinner.

  • Le C, restaurant in Gordes
Entering the village of Gordes, you will find Le C in the boutique hotel, Carcarille. Restaurant Le C will delight you with its fresh french cuisine of the region. I loved my meal on the beautiful terrace with a view of Gordes.

  • La Table de Xavier MATHIEU
Nestled outside of Gordes, up the hill in Joucas, La Table de Xavier MATHIEU, is a Michelin-starred dining experience for the most distinguished foodie. Chef Xavier MATHIEU seeks inspiration from the local Provencal region where he creatively uses what is in season to delight all of your senses. This culinary experience in the Luberon region of Provence will leave you wanting to return to Provence to dine again.
