Places to eat & drink in Greenwich Village
Breakfast
Buvette: Famous for its croques monsier and croque madame, you must also try the waffle sandwich or the chevre with steamed eggs, goat cheese and sundried tomatoes. This is the place to be in the West Village for breakfast, brunch, lunch and even dinner. Small and quaint, it is worth the wait and a seat at the bar doesn’t disappoint. The freshly squeezed OJ is delicious, yet expensive, and the La Colombe coffees are a must—I recommend the shaken espresso.
Tartinery: Only a short block from Washington Square Park, Tartinery exudes quaint Parisian flare with friendly service. The petite smashed avocado tartine and chia bowl are refreshing and light, while the strawberries and nutella tartines are a treat to the tastebuds! Great place for breakfast or lunch. You can also order “to go” items if you are in the vicinity and want to take a bite to eat in the park.
Mille-Feuille Bakery: Mille-Feuille Bakery is a delightful pastry haven nestled in the heart of New York City, celebrated for its exquisite French treats and charming atmosphere. With a name that pays homage to the classic French dessert, this bakery is a testament to the art of pastry making. You can’t beat the pain au chocolat and a latte to make your stroll through the Village even finer!
Lunch
Maman: For breakfast or lunch, Maman does not disappoint. Easily identified by the toile printed cups and the white flowers gracing their entrance, this is a spot you won’t miss on your stroll down University Place. Dine in or out, they offer fresh pastries, delicious coffee and amazing soups, salads and tartines.
Boucherie West Village: Whether it be for breakfast, brunch, lunch, cocktails or dinner, Boucherie offers it all. Transport yourself to a cafe off the Seine! If you are lucky, the street band might weave through the outdoor tables and entertain the crowd. The extensive wine list features a variety of French selections, and the cocktail menu includes creative twists on classic drinks.
Lao Ma Spicy (58 E. 8th Street, East Village): Lao Ma Spicy is a vibrant addition to the East Village culinary scene, celebrated for its authentic and bold flavors that transport diners straight to the heart of Chinese cuisine. My son and I go here every time I am in town visiting him. It is consistent, fresh and delicious! Each time we get a bit braver and add something new to our bowls. Our favorite thing is going through the line, versus ordering on the menu, but take your pick. Specializing in dishes from the Sichuan province, the restaurant is particularly known for its rich use of spices, particularly chili and Sichuan peppercorns, which create a tantalizing balance of heat and flavor.
Cocktails
Bar Pisellino: If you are grabbing lunch at Boucherie, just look across the street and you will see the line for cocktails outside Bar Pisellino. Worth the wait, they serve an amazing Aperol Spritz as well as cappuccinos and are open from eight am to 11 pm, so plenty of time to give them a try! The friendly staff embodies the Italian tradition of hospitality, making every guest feel at home. Whether you’re popping in for a quick espresso or settling in for an evening of wine and conversation, Bar Pisellino offers a delightful escape in the heart of the West Village.
Katana Kitten: Katana Kitten is a whimsical blend of modern cocktail culture and vintage Japanese aesthetics nestled in the heart of the West Village. This cozy bar exudes an eclectic charm, featuring dark wood accents, plush seating and a striking neon sign that hints at its playful spirit. The ambiance is a delightful mix of retro vibes and contemporary flair, with artful cocktail presentations that showcase a mastery of mixology. You must try the Shiso Gin and Tonic and the Slow-pitch Paloma…. and don’t forget to watch out for the shark in the bathroom!
Employees Only: Employees Only is a celebrated speakeasy-style bar in New York City, renowned for its expertly crafted cocktails and vibrant atmosphere. Tucked away in the West Village, this bar combines a vintage aesthetic with a lively, welcoming vibe that attracts both locals and cocktail enthusiasts alike. If you are looking for a refreshing cocktail, I would recommend the Westside or you can’t go wrong with the classic Manhattan. Worth popping by for a cocktail, even if its standing room only.
Analogue: Analogue Bar in the West Village is a cozy retreat that feels like a hidden gem, reminiscent of a charming library filled with the warm buzz of conversation and laughter. The inviting atmosphere, adorned with shelves of books and vintage decor, creates a perfect backdrop for unwinding after a long day. With a knack for crafting delicious cocktails and a talent for making guests feel right at home, he brings a personal touch to every visit. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, Josh is always ready with a recommendation or a thoughtful conversation. Happy hour at Analogue is a true highlight, offering an array of enticing drinks at great prices that encourage you to linger a little longer. If sitting at the bar, you will note that locals frequent the place, which is always a good sign!
Dinner
Via Carota: A table at Via Carota is worth the wait, which usually begins with a queue around 4:30 pm outside the restaurant—you will be among professional line holders, but don’t let this scare you off!. Once you get to the front of the line, you can pick your reservation time and return later, ready to feast on some of the best cacio pepe and insalata verde in Manhattan. Try walking in on the later side and grabbing a seat at the bar!
L’Artusi: L'Artusi in the West Village is a beloved gem that captures the essence of modern Italian dining with a flair that's both elegant and inviting. Known for its delectable dishes and vibrant atmosphere, this restaurant consistently draws food enthusiasts eager to experience its culinary delights. While L'Artusi can be very hard to get into, it's absolutely worth it for the exquisite food and lively ambiance. On one occasion, I was fortunate enough to walk in at the last minute and snag a seat at the extra-long bar. This spot not only offers a fantastic view of the bustling kitchen but also serves as a great social hub. I ended up striking up a conversation with another diner, and we bonded over our shared excitement for the menu. The friendly vibe and sense of community make L'Artusi a perfect place to meet new people while enjoying a fantastic meal. Favorite dishes include the wagyu carpaccio, burrata, tagliatelle and their infamous olive oil cake.

The menu is a celebration of fresh, local produce, with dishes that highlight the best of each season. One standout is the wood-fired cauliflower, which is perfectly charred and packed with flavor. The seasonal pasta dishes are also a must-try, showcasing creative combinations that elevate traditional recipes. Whether you opt for a hearty meat dish or a vibrant vegetarian option, each plate reflects a thoughtful approach to flavor and presentation.
Denino’s Pizzeria and Tavern: Denino’s Pizzeria in Greenwich Village is a must-visit for any pizza lover, boasting a reputation that’s been solidified by a glowing 9.0 rating from Barstool Sports—and for good reason! 4 Charles Prime Rib: 4 Charles Prime Rib is a hidden gem in the heart of New York City, known for its elusive charm and exceptional dining experience. Nestled in a cozy space, securing a table here feels like hitting the jackpot—many have tried, and some have been turned away. Rumor has it that even the upstairs neighbor has only managed to dine here twice, making it a true culinary treasure. The restaurant has garnered a devoted following, particularly for its legendary burger, which has reached iconic status. I first learned about it while visiting Lake Como in Italy, where fellow travelers raved about this unassuming spot back in New York.
