Nicknamed the Circus Agonalis, this archaeological site offers a unique glimpse into Roman sporting history. Castel Sant'Angelo
Calling all curious kids! Rome has a hidden gem — Castel Sant'Angelo! This isn't your average castle. Climb to the very top and see all of Rome laid out before you like a giant map. There's even a cool angel statue way up high keeping an eye on everything. Castel Sant'Angelo is a fun place to learn about Roman history and feel like real explorers on a mission!
Gladiator School, Colosseum tour
The Gladiator School Rome offers a unique, hands-on experience for families visiting Rome. This program isn't a real gladiator training ground, but rather a historical immersion activity geared towards children aged eight and above. Participants dress in replicas of gladiator clothing. You can learn basic sword-fighting techniques with safe training weapons and even engage in mock battles. Expert guides share interesting facts about gladiators, their training and life in ancient Rome. This can be a great way to ignite children's interest in history and make Roman culture come alive. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak tourist season.
Cooking class or Gelato Food Tour (or make your own tour)
Bond over fresh pasta or pizza making! Roman cooking classes are a delicious activity for families. Kids love getting messy and learning new skills, while adults pick up recipes and Roman food traditions. It's a fun break from sightseeing and a memorable way to create something tasty together. You can make your own, pasta, pizza or gelato!
Rome's gelato is everywhere. While DIY tours offer freedom, some food tours incorporate gelato into their itinerary alongside pizza and pasta. These tours can be a great way to experience hidden gems and learn interesting food facts from local experts. The gelato finale? Just the cherry on top. If you want to skip the tours, you can craft your own adventure: fruity flavors crawl, nutty delight, hunt or surprise yourself! Ask locals for hidden gems and local favorites. Savor the journey, one delicious scoop at a time.
Climb St. Peter's Basilica Dome
Kids will love conquering St. Peter's Basilica with its epic views. Adventurous kids aged eight and up with good stamina can tackle the classic 551-step climb, offering glimpses of the city through windows. It's a challenging feat with a big payoff. For younger adventurers, or those who prefer to conserve energy, an elevator bypasses most of the stairs (around 320) and takes you to a platform inside the dome. Either way, the panoramic views of Rome and the Vatican from the top are unforgettable. Be sure to check opening hours and grab tickets in advance (cash only for entry fees) as lines can get long. Bring your camera to capture this breathtaking perspective of the city! After your climb, you can walk through the Basilica for free. Note: separate admission is required to visit the Vatican museums and Sistine Chapel.
Jewish Quarter
Kids can uncover a secret corner of Rome in the Jewish Quarter! This historic area, one of the oldest in Europe, lets them explore narrow streets, peek in unique shops with tasty treats and even spot ancient Roman ruins peeking through the buildings. Fuel up on yummy Kosher pizzas and pastries, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain for good luck and find the playful Turtle Fountain with its bronze friends. Look out for special bronze plaques embedded in the sidewalks outside some buildings. These are memorials to Jewish residents deported during the Holocaust, a somber reminder of the area's history. It's a chance to explore something new, taste delicious treats and learn a little bit about the past — all in one hidden gem!
Trastevere
Trastevere beckons with its cobbled charm. This Tiber River gem offers a maze of colorful houses, hidden piazzas ideal for gelato pitstops and a relaxed atmosphere. Escape the bustling center and wander the streets lined with quirky shops and captivating street performers. Refuel at family-friendly restaurants serving classic pizzas and pastas. Don't miss the stunning mosaics of Santa Maria in Trastevere or the chance to snag a unique souvenir at a local market. Trastevere is a hidden gem offering a taste of authentic Roman life.
You can see a lot in one day because Rome is so walkable. Ditch the map and embrace the Roman spirit.
