Fora’s Take

East Haddam is home to wonderful state parks, interesting architecture, good food and a historic opera house. None of the attractions are overly busy, which makes East Haddam a quieter destination. The downtown area is walkable, but a car is necessary to get to most of the attractions in town.

Things to do in East Haddam, CT

An old grey castle.

For golfers visiting the area, East Haddam has two golf courses. Fox Hopyard Golf Club is a members-only club and the Black Birch Golf Course is open to the public. Devil's Hopyard State Park offers walking and hiking trails. Sitting atop a hill overlooking the Connecticut River is Gillette Castle State Park. This park has ample parking, many walking trails, picnic areas, a visitors center and the stone castle once owned by William Gillette, who brought Sherlock Holmes to the stage. The castle is open to the public on select dates. Visiting the castle during the Christmas holiday season is a wonderful treat. Another attraction in East Haddam and probably the most famous, is the Goodspeed Opera House. Many musicals have made their debut at Goodspeed and then went on to Broadway.

Places to eat & drink in East Haddam, CT

Window of a building from outside.

One of the best places to eat in East Haddam is the Gelston House, which offers lunch, dinner and wonderful views of the Connecticut River. Two Wrasslin' Cats Coffee House and Cafe is a funky place not too far from the Gelston House. A bit closer to town is Higher Grounds at 32 Main, which has a nice vibe to it.
