Things to do in Bruges

A historic building stands gracefully by the water under clear skies, with a boat floating nearby on a canal.

Often referred to as the "Venice of the North," Bruges is a charming medieval city that offers a unique blend of history, culture and natural beauty. I recently visited Bruges during the month of July for a two-day getaway. Although it is summertime, be aware the weather will most likely feel like fall so come prepared. However, nature is in full bloom, the canals are lined with flowers and the trees are blooming.

Start your visit by wandering the cobblestone streets on your own or with a guide. The Belfry Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site, provides breathtaking views of the city, while the Market Square brims with vibrant energy. You will find many shops offering waffles covered in chocolate; the smell is irresistible and they are well worth the stop!

A canal tour is a must, no visit to Bruges is complete without one. There are many offerings, and they typically last one hour.

Ours departed, from Tintin Shop Brugge, which had everything a Smurf and Tintin fan could dream of. Have a look inside and find the viewpoint to the canal from the second floor.

Stroll through the Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde with its white-colored house fronts and tranquil convent garden, founded in 1245. It is still home to some nuns from the Order of Saint Benedict and Order of Vincent de Paul. Located in front of the Lake of Love, it is indeed a very romantic sight.

The Gruuthuse museum is home to majestic tapestries, colorful stained-glass windows, wooden sculptures, historic lace, Burgundian manuscripts and Chinese porcelain. The highlight is the authentic late 15th century oratory which connects the palace and the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of our Lady) with a view of the Gothic chancel of the church.

The balcony offers a fantastic view of the most beautiful spots in Bruges, including one of the most photographed bridges and the Museum of the Church of Our Lady.
