Curator’s statement

Antigua, especially Sandals Grande Antigua, is very near and dear to my heart. My husband and I honeymooned there in 2008 and have traveled back several times. This particular resort will feel like two resorts in one! One side of the resort gives you that Caribbean feel we all know and love, while the other side provides a Mediterranean coast vibe. This resort can be as little or as much as you want it to be!

Things to do

As I mentioned, you can do as much or as little as you want. Sandals Grande Antigua sits on Dickerson Bay, which has one of the longest white sand beaches in Antigua. Choose from the Caribbean Grove side of the property and you’ll be surrounded by the lush tropical plants and flowers. Choose the Mediterranean Village and you’ll have a high rise view looking over the vast Caribbean Sea.

Whether you want to lounge beach side or pool side, the choice is yours! Dine at one of the several on property restaurants and bars. There are several activities to choose from, whether that be on property or off property. If you choose an excursion off property, you will be accompanied by a Sandals representative so you can feel safe and take in all the sites and sounds. Full disclosure, my husband and I tend to stay on the property while we visit Sandals Grande Antigua because we find we enjoy fully relaxing in the sun at the pool or beach, and the swim up pool bar is a nice touch, having a drink, while hanging in the pool, at a bar!

Being able to walk from one side of the resort to the other and getting two different vibes is nice! Regardless of which side your room or suite is on, you are always welcome to head to the pool, bars or restaurants on any side of the property.

*Note: you do NOT need to cross any roads to get from one side to the other! It’s just a casual stroll through the property!

We did take part in an off property excursion one year, an authentic Antiguan cooking class, where we made jerk chicken from scratch (best we’ve ever had,) plenty of side dishes, such as fried plantains, fresh salsa and salad! We also had the most incredible Rum Punch, so fresh, not overly sweet. But beware, it packs a serious punch!

Night time entertainment varies by evening but we always recommend after dinner, heading to the Piano Bar and singing along with your favorite tunes while enjoying a night cap.

There is a fitness center, as well as various group exercise classes. Most mornings, you can kick off your day participating in an aqua aerobics class! It’s fun and scorches some calories before you indulge in the all inclusive food and beverage! One of our most favorite things about Sandals Grande Antigua, and every Sandals Resorts property, tipping is INCLUDED in your package price! With the exception of Butlers and Spa staff, you never need to worry about carrying a wallet around!

Breakfast

For breakfast, you’ll have a few options, 1) Room Service, if your room/suite qualifies, 2) Bayside Restaurant, which has both indoor and outdoor seating and will be a buffet so you’re able to grab what you want, enjoy at your table and head out for your day, 3) two restaurants (one on either side of the resort) which offers breakfast a la carte, or 4) Cafe de Paris, which offers you fresh pastries, coffee, tea and ice cream.

Lunch

For lunch, I am always aiming to get jerk chicken and a salad. But you can also grab snack and deli meat at the bistro or grab a hot dog from the beach side hot dog cart!

Dinner

For dinner, with so many options to choose from, each providing it’s own cuisine, you can’t go wrong! However, if you see pumpkin soup and/or pumpkin risotto on the menu, grab it! Remember, you can order as much or as little as you want as it’s all inclusive. Want to hit two or three different places for dinner? DO IT!!! My husband and I love swinging by Soy, the sushi restaurant, for a little sashimi appetizer before making our way to our main dinner! After dinner, enjoy a drink with your loved one while lounging around the many fire pits located throughout the resort. And if you find yourself singing your heart out at the piano bar and get a little late night hunger, the pub offers food and drinks until 2am!
