Curator’s statement

The first time I visited Venice was just for the day, and I knew I had to return. My second trip was special in many ways. Notably, it was during me and my now-husband's first overseas adventure together, and it was during the historic "Acqua Alta" of 2019. Despite the daily high tide keeping us inside for an hour or so, the city was still magical. Nothing can dampen Venice's historic charm, the labyrinth of alleyways and delicious food.

Things to do in Venice

  • Get lost: No, really. The single best thing to do in Venice is to wander around the cobblestone alleyways and see what you can stumble upon. A unique souvenir, delicious cone of gelato or mysterious bar is just around the corner!

  • Cruise the canals in a gondola: Is it cliche? Yes. Should you do it anyway? Yes. There is nothing more iconic and romantic than cruising around Venice in a gondola, soaking in great views along the way.

  • Basilica di San Marco: Also known as St. Mark's Cathedral, this ornate church is covered in gold and has impressive murals to admire.

  • Doge's Palace: This iconic Gothic palace built in 1340, is a symbol of Venice and a true architectural masterpiece.

  • Visit Cannaregio: My favorite neighborhood in Venice, perfect for those seeking a local vibe. Wander through the alleyways, stopping only for a glass of wine at a Bacari (Venetian wine bar) or to buy a unique local souvenir.

  • Peggy Guggenheim Collection: Perfect for art enthusiasts. This modern art collection overlooks the Grand Canal and is home to an impressive sculpture garden.

  • Eat like a local: Although the city is tiny, Venice is overflowing with delicious food. Indulge on a half-day food & wine tour with a local guide to learn all the ins-and-outs of Venetian cuisine.

  • Teatro La Fenice: For those lucky enough to travel to Venice during opera season, splurge on a ticket to enjoy a show at this famed Opera house. Otherwise, enjoy a tour and admire the stunning architecture of this historic building.

Day Trips:

  • Murano & Burano: Take a day trip to these iconic colorful islands just a short boat ride away. Learn about glassblowing in Murano. Stroll around for the perfect Instagram picture in Burano and eat delicious food on this day's excursion.

  • Cantina Do Spade: This cozy bar serves traditional 'cicchetti' - a Venetian variety of small plates - and quality wine.

  • Mercati di Rialto: One of my favorite things to do in a new city is visit the local market! Also known as Rialto Market, this one is jam-packed with fresh food and fish, handmade pasta, charcuterie, imported cheese and more.

  • Trattoria da Mimmo: This highly-rated restaurant specializes in Italian dishes like seafood pasta, branzino and ravioli.

  • Al Grill: This steakhouse features high-quality grilled meats and a wine bar, loved by visitors and locals alike.

  • Gio's: This fine-dining spot in the St. Regis is perfect for a celebration dinner, complimented with views of the Grand Canal. Reservations recommended.

  • Suso: Anytime someone is traveling to Venetian, I tell them this is a must - rated the "best gelato in the world", you might end up here more than once!

  • Al Mariner: This spot is a local favorite for fresh seafood dishes like octopus and tuna tartare.

  • Osteria Fanal Del Codega: One of the most highly-rated restaurants in Venice, this spot is great for specialty pastas and high-quality meats.

  • Timon Vini: This 'Bacari' (wine bar) in Cannaregio serves up excellent steaks and a variety of wines.

  • Osteria all Testiere: Perfect for a special celebration, this restaurant has been in the Michelin guide since 1997 and features creative dishes made with the "catch of the day" - the freshest available seafood. Reservations required.
