Curator’s statement
As a former New Yorker, it was hard to rally to bring the family to NYC at Christmas, but the kids had been asking for years. While it’s overrun with tourists getting their holiday on during the Christmas season, it truly is the most wonderful time of year there; store windows are dressed for the holidays, every park is transformed into magical wonderlands, trees are all Christmas trees and the joy and spirit of the season is alive on every street. We did all the tourist-y things I didn’t ever do when I lived there and we loved every single minute of our trip. I think we’ll be back next year. ;)

Things to do in New York City
See a Broadway Show - If Wicked is still out, our kids liked that one. Lion King is also great for kids.
Rockettes Christmas Show - It was way better than I thought it would be and it really made the whole night feel super Christmas-y.
Walk the Highline/see Hudson Yards.
FAO Schwartz - Get there before it opens to get in line. Give yourself some time to get lost; it's totally worth it with kids. Take a picture with the toy soldier out front.
Do a Carols and Hot Chocolate boat ride around the city to see the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge - they leave from Chelsea Piers, which is a cool place to walk around too.
Visit the Moma - Of all the museums, this one is our fave. Kids really liked it too. Museum of Natural History is another good one.
Go to Times Square -- Don't stay long, just walk through it, grab a slice of pizza somewhere and MAYBE hit the M&M store if your kids absolutely make you.
It’s definitely worth a trip down to Ground Zero and walk around; you don't need to do the tour, but it's beautiful and pretty emotional.
Go to see the ice-skating rink and Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. It IS a tourist trap, but a worthwhile one.
Take the subway (take it anywhere, really)-- you could take it to Grand Central Station and get out an walk around there. It's beautiful and old and charming.
You'll see the Empire State Bldg. when you're walking around, you don't need to go up in it.
Go to Central Park, get a coffee and walk around at the very least -. Ice skating at Wolman’s rink in Central Park was our kid's favorite part of NYC.
Bryant Park and Union Square Park - Winter markets and ice skating rink.
Soho is a fun area to walk around - cool shopping and great little bars/restaurants.
Supreme or KITH store - semi- overrated but a hit if you have kids who like sneakers.
Places to Eat & Drink in New York City
Eat in Little Italy. There are tons of places popping up down there; just find one with good reviews. It's a fun vibe.
Little India (1st and 1st) is also a total vibe. Most of the restaurants are BYOB and have chili lights hanging and festive Indian music playing. None are really better/worse than the other — you’re going for the experience.
Get bagels at Black Seed Bagels.
Chocolate chip cookies at Levain Bakery.
Favorite brunch spot: Freemans
If you make the walk or subway stop over to Grand Central, stop and have an HH drink and oysters at Grand Central Oyster Bar— people-watching is incredible there.
Quality Meats - right near the 1 Hotel and cute little outdoor huts for dining in the winter.
Hidden speakeasy-ish in nature and one of the best burgers you’ll ever eat- at Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridien hotel
