Day 1: Arrive in Colorado & Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Sandy plain area.

Welcome to Colorful Colorado! Denver’s international airport makes it a convenient hub for your Colorado adventure. Grab a rental car — a four-wheel drive is highly recommended —and hit the road to your first national park.

But before doing that, stop at a gas station and buy bottles of water… lots of them… and drink a lot! Don’t ever underestimate the effects of altitude on your body. Migraines, dizziness, nausea… It takes an average of one to three days for bodies to acclimate to new altitudes, which means you’ll need to wait before exerting yourself too much.

Begin your Colorado adventure at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, a unique landscape of towering sand dunes. Hike to the summit of the tallest dune, sandboard down the slopes or simply relax and enjoy the stunning scenery. The park offers camping and lodging options, or you can stay in nearby Alamosa. Don't miss the opportunity to try a delicious Navajo frybread at a local eatery.

Distance: The drive from Denver Airport to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is approximately 3.5 hours.

Next, head to Mesa Verde National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its ancient cliff dwellings. Explore the intricate architecture of the Cliff Palace and Balcony House, and learn about the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited this region for centuries. Mesa Verde National Park offers various camping options, or you can choose to stay in nearby Cortez or Durango. For a unique dining experience, try a local Mexican restaurant in Cortez.

Day 3: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Dark, moody mountains with a dark colored lake and dry shrub.

Continue your journey to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, a dramatic canyon with sheer cliffs and rushing rapids. Hike along the rim or take a boat tour through the canyon to appreciate its grandeur. The park offers camping and lodging options, or you can stay in nearby Montrose. For a hearty meal, enjoy a steak dinner at a local restaurant.
