Things to do in Lake Como

A signpost on a mountain trail, pointing the way against a backdrop of lake and peaks under a clear blue sky.

Hike to a medieval castle

  • Start in the center of town in Varenna and follow the cobblestone path about 30 minutes uphill to Castello di Vezio, a medieval castle dating back to the late 11th century. From the top, take in the spectacular views and get a glimpse of the storied past of Italy - the uphill walk is worth it!

Orrido di Bellano

  • Just a short drive from Varenna, Orrido di Bellano is a natural gorge created 15 million years ago and is a sight to behold. This nature walk features a boardwalk inside the gorge itself, making you feel as if you stepped into another world.

Monte Grona

  • If you're looking for an active adventure, the 3.1 mile out-and-back trail situated above Menaggio is just what you're looking for! The trek to the top of Monte Grona (1736m) features jawdropping views of the region. Make sure to stop at Rifugio Menaggio for a peaceful break and refreshments.

Go villa hopping

  • Villa Monastero, located in Varenna, was originally a convent founded at the end of the 12th century. Get a glimpse of what life might have been at that time by strolling through the lush, terraced botanical gardens and visiting the house museum featuring original decorations and furniture from the villa's various owners.

  • Step back in time and stroll through the stunning gardens of Villa Melzi, located just a short stroll from the harbor of Bellagio.

  • Book a tour on a classic wooden boat captained by a local guide to show off all of the gems dotted across the lake's vast shorelines.

Relax in style

  • Book a service at the T-Spa of Grand Hotel Tremezzo and make full use of their gorgeous amenities which include a ritual circuit of heat, steam, water, and ice as well as an idyllic infinity pool with breathtaking views of the lake.

Rent a boat

  • There are plenty of small boats available to rent for an afternoon - perfect for a day of exploration and swimming on the lake! You will have the option to select a boat with or without a captain based on your comfort level, and a variety of rental companies to choose from based in the larger towns (think Bellagio, Menaggio, Varenna).

Day Trips:

If you want to add a little Swiss adventure, Lugano is a one-hour drive, St. Moritz is two hours, and Lucerne is three hours by car!

Bellagio

  • Dispensa 63 - This charming restaurant offers one of the best meals in Bellagio with a small but well curated menu that rotates with the seasons. The open-concept kitchen makes you feel like you are at an intimate dinner party in a friend's home.

  • Hotel du Lac - Head to the rooftop bar in the evening for a sunset aperitivo at Hotel du Lac, open every afternoon through sundown (weather permitting).

  • Enoteca Cava Turacciolo - This wine bar is tucked away in a cave off a little side street in Bellagio. The hosts are extremely knowledgeable and make everyone there feel like family. Be prepared to leave with new friends a new favorite wine!

  • Bistrot Antichi Sapori - Best truffle pasta! Enough said.

  • Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni - Don't miss cocktail hour in the iconic lobby to feel like you're stepping back in time.

Tremezzo

  • La Fagurida - Come here for a rustic and hospitable atmosphere with a spectacular view! Ask a local for the best restaurant on the lake and there's a good chance they'll name La Fagurida!
