Things to do in Lisbon

The National Palace of Pena stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains on a hazy day.
  • Visit a historic tower - The Torre de Belem is a 16th-century fortification that was the main entrance to Lisbon. It is a great example of Portugal's former maritime and colonial power. Today it is an iconic symbol of Lisbon and a must-see for those visiting the city.

  • Catch great views from this massive monument — The Padrao dos Descobrimentos is hard to miss from the riverfront. Take the lift to the top for panoramic views of the Tagus River and Lisbon skyline.

  • Take a walking tour of Lisbon. This is a great way to get to know Lisbon and learn more about Portuguese history. Your local expert guide will provide you with detailed information about neighborhoods, monuments and local culture.

  • Visit the National Tile Museum - This museum is in a former convent. It shows how important tile artwork is to Portugal and how it is seen all over the country.

  • Enjoy a Fado performance — Head to the Bairro Alto neighborhood to catch a Fado performance. This genre of powerful music is unique to Portugal and renowned for its mournful tones and lyrics, often capturing the feelings of life at sea or the struggles of the poor.

  • Sail the Tagus River during sunset — An incredibly romantic way to enjoy the skyline and riverfront is via sailboat. Enjoy wine, cheese and the breeze as you sail under the 25 de Abril Bridge and past historic monuments.

  • Visit a monastery — The Jeronimos Monastery is a masterpiece of Portuguese architecture and an important historical site. Located in the charming Belem neighborhood, this National Monument is a must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Spend the afternoon at LX Factory. This old factory has been turned into a trendy group of hip shops, bars and restaurants. It is a great place to find unique souvenirs and grab a bite to eat.

Day trip

Sintra - Take a day trip to this quaint and charming town just a half-hour drive from the city center. Explore ancient Moorish castles and a palace fit for a king. End the day with a delicious meal in the town center.

Places to eat & drink in Lisbon

Dine at Alma, a high end restaurant at Lisbon with rich wooden furnishings and modern lighting.
  • Cantinho do Avillez — This cantina serves excellent local fare in a casual setting, created by renowned Portuguese chef Jose Avillez.

  • Sol e Pesca — This no-frills local nook serves a variety of local canned fish, such as sardines, alongside beer and wine.

  • Restaurante Tasca do Chico - Anthony Bourdain once visited. This cozy traditional pub features local delicacies and daily Fado performances.

  • 1868 Cocktail Boutique - This fancy cocktail bar opened earlier this year. It makes delicious drinks and offers great service in a beautiful place. My favorite was the Negroni flight.

  • A Ginjinha — This tiny open-front bar serves only one thing, the addictive cherry liqueur, 'Ginja'.

  • Hotel do Chiado Rooftop Bar — This classy bar has tasty libations and excellent views of the city, best visited late in the evening.

  • Alma - Perfect for a special occasion, this high-end restaurant uses only the most fresh local ingredients in its imaginative dishes. It has earned two Michelin stars for its excellence. Reservations recommended.

  • 100 Maneiras — Another spot perfect for a special occasion, this intimate restaurant serves a tasting menu of seasonal dishes influenced by Portuguese tradition. Reservations recommended.

  • Cervejaria Ramiro — This relaxed seafood and beer-drinking eatery is a local favorite, serving the most fresh seafood available. Indulge in spider crab, jumbo prawns and barnacles alongside a pint.

  • Time Out Market — This large market has something for everyone — from seafood to steaks, cocktails to small plates and everything in between.

  • Pasteis de Belem — Probably the most iconic dish coming out of Lisbon, this tiny egg tart leaves nothing to be desired! Try one or share a dozen with friends.
