Day 1: Arrive in Dublin

A wall with barrels of different Irish whiskeys.

Just landed in Dublin, and let me tell you, you're probably beat! Don't worry, I planned ahead and snagged an early check-in at the hotel before you left. That way, you can drop your luggage and hit the ground running (well, maybe more like crawling at this point, thanks to the plane ride!).

I have a secret weapon for exploring a new city with tired kids: hop-on, hop-off bus tours! They're a lifesaver because you get to see all the cool stuff without walking miles, which is perfect for little legs (and sleepy adults!). This specific tour even takes you past all the places you can explore tomorrow, but also past places like the Guinness Storehouse - imagine learning about their famous beer and then enjoying a pint with a stunning city view from the Gravity Bar!

Or you could check out Phoenix Park, a massive park with the Dublin Zoo and the Áras an Uachtaráin (the President's residence). The kids will love having some space to run wild and burn off that airplane energy!

Day 2: Explore Trinity College & More of Dublin

The inside of a library at Trinity College

After breakfast, you can head to Trinity College and check out the Book of Kells! Walking around the campus is awesome in itself, but the library is seriously stunning – one of the most beautiful libraries you'll ever see. You can choose a guided tour or explore on your own, but make sure to book your tickets in advance because they only let a certain number of people in at a time. Good news, though, they offer family discounts!

Once you've wandered the college grounds, let's head to Temple Bar and grab some delicious pizza at Pi Pizza. Temple Bar is a fun area with lots of cool shops to explore, so take your time and soak it all in.

For the afternoon, you can choose your adventure: explore the historic Dublin Castle or relax in the beautiful St. Stephen's Green Park. What do you think sounds more fun? Castle adventure or park chill time?

Top off your Dublin adventure with a delicious dinner at The Bank Bar and Restaurant, a local favorite known for its modern atmosphere and delectable cuisine.

Day 3: Drive to Northern Ireland

A family posing in front of castle ruins during the daytime

Alright, time to pick up our rental car and head north for the Northern Ireland leg of our adventure! Let's break up the three-hour drive with a pit stop at a pretty cool place: Royal Hillsborough Castle. This isn't just any castle, it's actually the official residence of the British Royal Family when they visit Northern Ireland! It's like stepping into another world, with 100 acres of stunning gardens to explore, beautifully decorated state rooms, and even a cafe for some yummy food and drinks (make sure to check their opening hours as they vary seasonally).Feeling peckish? You can grab a bite at the castle cafe or head across the street to the charming, family-owned Plough Inn. They have delicious food and a welcoming atmosphere, perfect for refueling after a long travel day. Finally, don't miss a quick stroll by Hillsborough Parish Church on your way back to the car park. It's a beautiful building with a rich history, definitely worth a few minutes of your time.

Day 4: Start the Causeway Coastal Route

A round structure next to the beach

Days 4-7: Buckle up, because it's time to explore the Causeway Coastal Route! This 120-mile scenic drive stretches between Belfast and Derry, and it's like a greatest hits tour of Northern Ireland. While you technically could do it in a day, we recommend taking at least three to four days to truly soak it all in. Imagine stopping at charming villages, exploring hidden coves, and maybe even tackling a scenic hike or two.

Day 4:

Castlerock Beach: Relax on the golden sand and soak up the views.

Mussenden Temple: This miniature temple perched on a cliff is a sight to behold.

Mussenden Sea Cave: Explore the hidden Mussenden Sea Cave, accessible through a secret tunnel from Mussenden Temple. This hidden gem offers a sense of adventure and exploration.

Magilligan Viewpoint: Capture panoramic views of the coastline.

Derry: Walk the historic city walls and admire the vibrant murals that tell a unique story.

Day 5: Kinbane & Portrush

Kinbane Castle Ruins: A must-visit for older kids thanks to its unique location and history. Just be ready to climb the 140 steps!

Portrush: Stroll along the charming town and relax on the beautiful Portrush White Rocks beach. End your day with a vibrant evening in the lively seaside town of Portrush. Enjoy delicious seafood at a Harbour Bar, stroll along the pier, or try your luck at the amusement arcade.

Harbour Bar: End the day with a delicious dinner at this popular spot.

Day 6: Rope Bridge, Giant's Causeway & Dunluce

A rope bridge between two grassy cliffs next to the sea

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge: Test your nerves on this historic bridge, originally built by salmon fishermen. Don't forget to book your tickets in advance!

Giant's Causeway: Explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and marvel at the over 40,000 basalt columns formed millions of years ago. While you can see the site from afar without tickets, purchasing them offers a shuttle and various benefits, especially if you have limited mobility or young children.

Dunluce Castle: This dramatic ruin perched on a cliff edge is the perfect way to end your coastal adventure. Just be sure to arrive before the 3:30 p.m. closing time.

Day 7: Nature Escapes & Bushmills Distillery

A pathway through large green trees

Glenariff Forest Park: Embark on a magical quest through the "Glenariff Fairy Trail." Follow the trail, solve riddles, and discover enchanting fairy houses hidden within the forest. Perfect for igniting imaginations!

Dark Hedges: Embark on a walk through the iconic Dark Hedges, a breathtaking avenue of beech trees featured in the popular TV series "Game of Thrones." Feel transported to another world as sunlight filters through the leaves and creates a magical atmosphere.

Ballintoy Harbour: This charming harbor boasts a beautiful beach and idyllic setting. Enjoy a relaxing stroll, take some photos, or simply soak up the serenity of the coastal landscape.

White Park Bay: This secluded beach offers stunning scenery, rock pools to explore, and a chance to witness diverse seabirds.

Bushmills Distillery: Immerse yourself in the world of Irish whiskey by taking a tour of the oldest licensed distillery in the world, Bushmills Distillery. You'll learn about the whiskey-making process and even sample some of their renowned products (adults only, of course!).

Day 8: Belfast or Culloden Estate

Giant Causeway's striking hexagonal basalt columns.

Decision Time: Belfast or Culloden Estate?

Today, we have a decision to make: head straight to Belfast or detour to Culloden Estate? No matter which path you choose, let's conquer the remaining stretch of the incredible Causeway Coastal Route from Ballycastle to Carrickfergus. Buckle up for some amazing sights!

But on the way, make sure you see the last bit of the Coastal Causeway you haven’t seen yet.

Cushendun Caves: Ever seen Game of Thrones? These caves were featured in the series and offer a glimpse into the dramatic coastline.

The Gobbins Cliff Path: Calling all adventurous souls! This thrilling cliffside walk features bridges over crashing waves and explores hidden caves (guided tours only).

Carrickfergus Castle: Feeling like royalty? Step back in time and explore this well-preserved Norman castle dating back to the 12th century.

Day 9: Belfast Bound or Culloden Estate Escape

The architecture of Belfast City Hall is admirable.

Belfast Bound or Culloden Estate Escape

If you chose the city life, your morning in Belfast is jam-packed with historical and cultural gems!

Belfast City Hall: This magnificent building is the heart of the city and offers stunning architecture and guided tours.

Victoria Square: Take a stroll through this vibrant square, home to shops, restaurants, and a stunning dome offering panoramic views.

Titanic Belfast: Immerse yourselves in the fascinating story of the Titanic at this world-class museum.

After a day filled with history and exploration, you'll head back to the Maldron Hotel Dublin Airport for a comfortable night's stay and a convenient morning shuttle.
