Things to do in Austin, Texas
Outdoors
Barton Springs: There isn't anything more Austin than spending the day soaking in the Austin heat at Barton Springs. This is a natural swimming pool that everyone must check out.
Zilker Park/Lady Bird Lake trail: After/before you are done at Barton Springs, walk the trail to get a great view of Lady Bird Lake and the city of Austin.
Rent a Kayak or Paddleboard: Join the masses in Lady Bird Lake with a paddleboard on a hot day. Drink a few drinks, meet some new people and enjoy the water on a sunny day.
Rent a Boat: Hang out on the water drinking and eating snacks while you are driven up to Lake Austin and enjoying the weather.
Spa
Take a day trip up to Miraval and experience one of the best spa days you can find. If you choose to stay in the city, you can make your way up to Miraval about 30 minutes outside of downtown Austin to buy a day pass and be pampered to your greatest desire.
Shopping
South Congress: South Congress is on every list of what to do in Austin, for good reason. It is a fun atmosphere with great shops and multiple places to grab a drink and a bite to eat.
The Domain: More of a traditional outdoor mall, The Domain has your brand name stores and designer stores. There are some great places to eat and drink as well, you can easily spend an entire day here.
Weekend Farmers Market
Come out to a farmers market and see what makes Austin such a special place. From all the local farmers to the delicious snacks. These farmers markets are loaded with all the best products in Austin.
Original Whole Foods
If you shop at Whole Foods, check out the original location downtown on Lamar. It is one of the bigger Whole Foods out there, equipped with a bar and a couple of restaurants.
Nightlife
Quill Room: A French-inspired bar in the Austin Proper that has incredible design, live music, and a very fun vibe.
Equipment Room: A vinyl listening room in Hotel Magdalena that is Japanese-inspired with great cocktails and fun snacks.
Holiday on 7th: Another French-inspired spot for great cocktails and even better bites to eat.
Day trips
Miraval: If you want to have an incredible spa experience, head up to Hill Country to Miraval for just that.
Lake Travis: Not much is better in the heat than a boat day out on the lake. Head up to Lake Travis to rent a boat and enjoy.
Magnolia Silos: For all the Chip and Joanna Gaines fans out there, Austin is about an hour away from Waco, where The Magnolia Silos are. My wife absolutely loves going up here for a morning. There is plenty for the whole family to do, food trucks, entertainment for kids and tons of shopping.
Places to eat & drink in Austin, Texas
Coffee
Flat Track Coffee: This half-coffee shop, half-bike shop location serves the best coffee in Austin with the most Austin vibe. I frequent this place.
Figure 8: They have fantastic coffee. It is small and you will feel at home here.
Manana: The best coffee on South Congress is at Manana.
Brunch
Cafe No Se: Located in the South Congress Hotel, they serve fantastic pastries and breakfast dishes. The vibe, design, and food are all on point.
Paperboy: The food here is incredible. I can't recommend a specific dish because everything is that good. You can't go wrong here.
BBQ
Terry Blacks: Hands down the best BBQ in Austin. Austin is the BBQ capital of Texas and this is the best place for my money. If you want something unique, go for the Beef Rib. Make sure you come hungry!
Franklins: Franklins is one of the most famous BBQ spots in the United States and for good reason. The food is great, but the lines can be long. You can make a morning out of it, bring a chair and try to meet some new people while waiting in line.
Tacos
If you come to Austin, you have to try breakfast tacos, as they are kind of Austin's claim to fame. For me, there are two locations that stand above the rest.
El Primo on south 1st is a truck that serves the best tacos in general in Austin and their breakfast tacos are top of the line. Cash only.
Joes Bakery on east 7th has the best tortillas in the city, and to me, that makes a great taco. You will not be disappointed with anything you order here.
Sushi/Asian Cuisine
Sushi by scratch: An incredible omakase experience that you will need to book well in advance. This is a special sushi bar experience that you don't want to miss.
Uchi: Uchi is a great place for sushi and other Japanese dishes.
1618 Asian Fusion: Without question my favorite restaurant in Austin. They serve mainly Vietnamese food with some other Southeast Asian dishes mixed in. They have the best pho in Texas, dare I say in the United States.
Bars
Still Austin - A bit outside of town, but worth the trip. On a hot day, there is nothing better than a (C)old Fashioned from Still Austin, which is exactly as it sounds... a frozen old fashioned.
Whisler's: This is the best bar on the east side (which is the best place to go out IMO) and it's not even close. The design inside the bar is fantastic lit by only candles and there is a huge outdoor space to mingle, hang out with your friends and enjoy those Texas summer nights.
