Things to do in Koh Samui

The authentic north: Bo Phut and beyond

My journey began in the charming northern region of Bo Phut, which I chose as my home base. This area, particularly the enchanting Fisherman's Village, epitomizes Koh Samui's perfect balance of laid-back island life and refined luxury.

Fisherman's Village is a delightful fusion of old-world charm and contemporary sophistication. As you stroll down its quaint streets, you'll find yourself transported to a bygone era, with traditional wooden shophouses seamlessly blending with chic boutiques and gourmet restaurants.

For an unforgettable evening, I recommend heading to Coco Tams. This beachfront bar offers an unparalleled relaxation experience. Sink into one of their signature oversized bean bags, toes in the sand, and indulge in their expertly crafted fruit daiquiris or innovative coffee mocktails. The gentle lapping of waves and the warm sea breeze create the perfect ambiance for watching the sun dip below the horizon.

Every even day, Wharf Street in Fisherman's Village transforms into a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds and aromas. The Wharf Street Market is a sensory delight, offering an eclectic mix of local handicrafts, street food and live performances. It's the perfect place to immerse yourself in the local culture and pick up unique souvenirs.

Discovering tranquil coastal havens

While Koh Samui is renowned for its beaches, the true gems lie off the beaten path. Bang Por and Bang Pho, located in the north, offer pristine stretches of sand far from the madding crowds. Here, you can experience the serenity of island life as it was meant to be.
Hat Mae Nam is another hidden paradise. This expansive beach is ideal for long, contemplative walks, especially at sunset when the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues. For sheer natural beauty, Coco Beach is unparalleled. Its crystal-clear waters and powdery sand make it a must-visit destination for beach enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Wellness and spiritual retreats

Koh Samui is not just a feast for the senses; it's also a sanctuary for the soul. The island boasts world-class wellness retreats that cater to those seeking physical and spiritual rejuvenation.
Kamalaya Wellness Resort stands out as a holistic haven. This award-winning retreat offers bespoke programs focusing on detoxification, stress management and emotional balance. Set against a backdrop of lush tropical gardens, Kamalaya provides a serene environment for deep healing and self-discovery.

For those drawn to Eastern spiritual practices, the Dipabhāvan Meditation Center offers an immersive experience in Buddhist teachings and meditation. Nestled in a tranquil forest setting, this center provides a unique opportunity to disconnect from the outside world and journey inward.

Nature enthusiasts will find solace at Tamarind Springs. This eco-luxury spa seamlessly blends with its jungle surroundings, offering traditional Thai treatments and herbal steam caves. The experience of being enveloped in the healing embrace of nature while receiving world-class spa treatments is truly unparalleled.

A hidden gem that shouldn't be missed is Ban Suan Lung Khai. This secluded oasis features natural hot springs and mud baths, providing a unique and therapeutic experience. Spending a day here, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature, is the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life.

Day trips

Exploring the untamed southwest and island hopping

While much of Koh Samui has embraced tourism, the southwestern part of the island remains largely untouched. This wild and rugged region offers a glimpse into Koh Samui's unspoiled beauty. Nature lovers and adventure seekers will find this area particularly appealing, with its dense jungles, hidden waterfalls and secluded beaches.

No visit to Koh Samui is complete without exploring its neighboring islands. From the western coast, you can easily arrange day trips to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
Koh Phangan, famous for its full moon parties, offers much more than just nightlife. Its secluded beaches and lush interior make it a paradise for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility.

Koh Tao, on the other hand, is a diver's dream. Its crystal-clear waters are home to vibrant coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Whether you're a seasoned diver or a curious beginner, the underwater world of Koh Tao is sure to leave you in awe.

Culinary journey through authentic flavors

To truly understand a culture, one must delve into its cuisine. Koh Samui offers a gastronomic adventure that goes far beyond the typical tourist fare. For an authentic seafood experience, I highly recommend Bang Por Seafood. This rustic eatery serves up the freshest catches in a laid-back beachfront setting. Another local favorite is Siriphoca Mr Adul, where you can savor traditional Thai flavors with a focus on seafood delicacies.

For those seeking to explore the diversity of Asian cuisine, venture into one of the Myanmar traditional restaurants scattered across the island. These hidden gems offer a unique culinary experience, introducing you to the rich and complex flavors of Burmese cuisine.

While luxury resorts offer exquisite dining options, the heart of Thai cuisine beats strongest in local eateries. Sakhon Kitchen is a prime example, serving home-style Thai cooking that will tantalize your taste buds. For a more innovative take on Thai cuisine, Daksen offers a fusion experience that bridges traditional flavors with modern culinary techniques.

Need to know

Places to skip:

Chaweng: This area is often overcrowded and overly commercialized, detracting from the authentic Thai experience many travelers seek.

Lamai: Similar to Chaweng, Lamai has become quite touristy and may not offer the serene atmosphere found in other parts of the island.

Banyan Market: This market lacks the authenticity of local markets and may not provide a genuine cultural experience.

Elephant sanctuaries: Many of these are not as ethical as they claim to be. It's best to avoid them to ensure you're not supporting any potential animal exploitation.

"Massage" parlors on main streets: These are often fronts for less reputable businesses and should be avoided.

One exception: While Chaweng is generally recommended to skip, the Ladyboy Divas Cabaret show can be an entertaining experience. However, be prepared for aggressive photo-op sales at the end of the show.
