Things to do in Morocco

Be a respectful tourist - The busy and more populated destinations like Marrakech and Fes can feel overwhelming to some. Inside the medina/souks is very busy with locals, other tourists, shop owners, donkeys and scooters - take a breath, explore, shop, get lost! Dress modestly, be aware of local customs and Islamic practices, leave small tips for service workers (much appreciated) and learn basic phrases like “Shukran” (thank you) and “Salam Alaykum” (hello) to show respect and appreciation of the Muslim culture.
Stay in a Riad - To truly immerse oneself in Moroccan culture, staying in a riad offers an authentic experience. Riads are Moroccan homes converted to boutique hotels usually offering 4-12 guest rooms facing an interior courtyard typically with lush gardens, fountains or even a small pool to enjoy. Unique architecture, rich colors, mosaics and woodwork - your eyes won’t know where to look! Riads offer peace, quiet and relaxation amidst the bustling cities! Don’t skip out on any meals offered - breakfast/dinner (restaurant quality and enjoyed in an intimate setting) or the mint tea which is offered upon arrival!
Take a tuk-tuk ride - A fun and affordable way to arrive at your dinner reservation! Your driver will navigate the narrow, windy roads! If you're lucky, they will take you on an adventure through the crowded squares, possibly stopping off to grab a treat or savory bite! Just make sure to negotiate the price beforehand or ask if they use a meter to avoid confusion. An eco-friendly transportation option. Get ready for a wild ride!
Make it a road trip - Planning a multi-destination or multi-week trip? Rent a car to give yourself flexibility and the luxury of exploring at your own pace! Morocco has well-developed roads and infrastructure. Highways are fast and efficient for long-distance travel, offer signage in French and Arabic, GPS/hot spots can be added during the rental process. Police often set up speed traps, so it’s important to drive carefully and respect speed limits. Driving internationally is not for everyone; however, if you are comfortable driving on windy roads, different terrains - highly recommend road-tripping through this picturesque country!
Must-visit landmarks - Morocco is a refreshing destination for travelers who enjoy the outdoors, open air markets, architecture and history! The nightlife at the Jemaa el-Fnaa Square in Marrakesh will give anyone a boost of energy, Chefchaouen (also known as “The Blue City”) is perfect to wander around and photograph the shades of blue painted buildings. For TV/film buffs, it Benhaddou is a must see as Game of Thrones and Gladiator 2 were filmed here, Majorelle Garden is lush, vibrant and once owned and restored by Yves Saint Laurent. Todra Gorge, located in the High Atlas Mountains, is known for its dramatic cliffs and deep, narrow canyons. It’s a popular spot for hiking, rock climbing and photography. Don’t miss a visit to the “new city” in Marrakesh and Casablanca to find contemporary accommodations, modern eateries and (my favorite) third-wave coffee shops!
Book a glamping experience in the Sahara Desert - For the most unique and romantic experience, book an epic two-night stay in the Sahara! Berber-style glamping typically includes traditional meals, all the comforts of a hotel room (comfortable bedding, en-suite bathroom, toiletries, etc.), access to desert activities like camel treks, sand-boarding, stargazing, amazing sunrises and sunsets. Some camps provide the opportunity to meet local Berber people, learn about their nomadic traditions and enjoy traditional music and dance around the campfire. Insider tip: Many camps are located on the edges of the dunes. In order to experience the Erg Chebbi Dunes in Merzouga, reaching heights of up to 150 meters (492 feet), book a dune buggy excursion.
Visit a hammam - What’s a vacation (or honeymoon) without a relaxing and cleansing spa moment? In the hammam, your whole body is cleansed, exfoliated and nourished. Luxurious hair wash and scalp massage may be included. Indulge in a massage afterwards, if offered, for a fully rejuvenating experience.
Carry toilet paper/wipes - Simple, be prepared! Especially if you are road-tripping, roadside stops do not always have these basic necessities.
Places to eat & drink in Morocco

La Trattoria - Italian food in Morocco? YES. Beautifully candle lit ambiance, located in Marrakesh, tables surrounding a glowing pool in a glass roof courtyard. All of the Italian classics with plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options. Reservations required!

Coffee inside the old medina of Marrakesh - First up is Kesh Cup. A small cafe serving delicious coffee with all milk options (almond, oat and cow). Next is Chez Bismilah SAND Coffee. A Turkish sand coffee made by the owner who is the kindest and most welcoming! He humbly prioritizes his guests to ensure an enjoyable and educational experience.

Cafe Clock is located in Fes (additional locations in Marrakesh and Chefchaouen) - Besides yummy meals, Cafe Clock offers cooking classes and gives back to the community by donating 10 dirhams of every camel burger sale to a local cause.
% Arabica Casablanca - It is a modern coffee shop in Casablanca. Indoor/outdoor seating in a minimalist setting with baristas who know how to serve a great cup!
Insider tip
Unlike other travel destinations like Europe or the USA where restaurants are where travelers typically eat most meals, I highly recommend not skipping out on any meals offered by your riad. Their meals are made with love, local products and you are never rushed! Tajine is the most common meal made in Morocco and there are different variations made with meat or vegetarian options. Lunch/dinner typically begins with Arabic salad and warm Berber bread before your main dish. Portions are large here, share a tajine with your travel partner and you’ll still have leftovers!
Insider coffee tip
If your plan includes road-tripping from one destination to another, don’t be nervous to stop at one of the many roadside coffee cars/vans. Yes, coffee made from an espresso machine in the back of a vehicle! Here or in cafes, the common coffee order is a Café Noir, a small cup of espresso or a Nous Nous made from half milk and half espresso, similar to a cortado.
