Things to do in North Cascades

Hiking

The North Cascades National Park Service Complex preserves some of the finest mountain country in North America. This region is known for its extensive network of hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging multi-day treks. For a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape, consider hiking up to Maple Pass. This 7-mile loop trail takes you through alpine meadows, past cascading waterfalls and to the summit, where you'll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the North Cascades.

Water Activities

If you prefer a more relaxed outdoor experience, Winthrop is also an excellent base camp for water activities. The nearby Methow River offers fantastic opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing. Cast your line into the crystal-clear waters and try your luck at catching trout or salmon. Alternatively, you can rent a kayak and explore the river at your own pace, taking in the serene beauty of the surrounding nature.

Rock Climbing

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, Winthrop is just a short drive away from some world-class rock climbing spots. Mazama, a small town located nearby, is a popular destination for climbers of all skill levels. The Rocking Horse Bakery - Start the day with Morning coffee and a fresh-baked pastry at the local Rocking Horse Bakery. Try one of their delectable handmade pastries with a smooth espresso drink. Located right in Winthrop, Washington, Lariat Coffee Roasters produces some of the finest 100% organically roasted coffee around, having won numerous awards at national competitions over the past few years.

At the Casia Lodge and Ranch, you can relax on the Veranda as you take in sweeping views and savor locally sourced seasonal cuisine by James Beard Award-winning Chef Jason Wilson. The menus are thoughtfully created by our culinary team, who draw inspiration from the changing seasons and rich local flavors of the Methow Valley. Whether you’re seeking a fine dining experience or more casual fare, we have something to satisfy every appetite.

Try Arrowleaf Bistro, where they pride ourselves in serving consciously curated plates crafted with love and care, using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients from the PNW. The menu showcases the region's bountiful produce, sustainable meat and seafood, ensuring a unique and vibrant dining experience. Winthrop has one brewery, one winery and three cideries. The Wine Shed offers over 600 varieties of wine from around the world. Also a selection of 50 scotches, 40 different bourbons, 50 tequilas and mezcals, liqueurs and craft beers.

The Methow Valley Cider House offers fine ciders from trees planted and nurtured of many varieties of cider apples from old American, English and French trees. There is a tasting room on site where families are welcome to try ciders, play bocce ball, listen to live music and generally enjoy hanging out in a beautiful, scenic orchard. Along with tasting the wonderful ciders, there is a full restaurant onsite.
